Slump?

I finished The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins a week ago today. I haven't read anything since! I've picked up and set back down four books, but nothing has grabbed my attention. I've had over three fantastic months of reading, so I'm not too concerned, but I am getting a little impatient and want to settle into something soon!

These are the four books I've attempted to read:

The Travelling Hornplayer
by Barbara Trapido

My mom passed this one on to me. I may try it again at a later date.

Tide, Feather, Snow: A Life in Alaska
by Miranda Weiss

I snagged this ARC at work. After a dozen pages, I decided it wasn't for me. However, I know a book fool who would love to read it, so off it goes!

The Musician's Daughter
by Susanne Dunlap

I received a beautiful (signed) copy of this from the author. I definitely plan to give it another try at a later date.

The Last Child
by John Hart

Another ARC from work. Read several pages and decided it wasn't appealing to me. Back to work it went.

I'm not going to review these, nor give them DNF ratings. I basically perused them as I would in a bookstore and don't feel the need to give them a write-up. However, I plan to get my review for The Hunger Games posted in the next day or two. And, yes, I loved it!!!

Eh, I hate that restless feeling where every book you pick up and glance through just doesn't peek your interest. I have been there many times! I hope something strikes your fancy soon :0)

  2. The Hunger Games is so good! I stayed up til 1 am last night, and I am at the point where there are only 6 left. I bet I stay up too late tonight and finish it.

  3. I'm finally out of my reading slump! April has been a good month for me - lots of great reading. And there is still a week left in the month. Wonder how many more I can read?

  4. LOL I think I went through a slump after The Hunger Games too. Man, I cannot WAIT until Catching Fire comes out.

It was nice to have you following me on Twitter for 0.00002 seconds yesterday :)

  5. You are not the first person who has had a hard time reading something else after finishing The Hunger Games! I will have to keep that in mind when my copy eventually arrives for me at the library!

  6. I think we all have those slumps at times--for me they occur right after I have read an exceptional book. Then it feels like nothing else measures up.
Hope you settle down soon--some of those book you have tried look really interesting to me!

  7. First, I just wanted to let you know that I had my surgery yesterday and am doing well. Should be home tomorrow afternoon. I don't have access to e-mail, that's why I decided to leave a comment on your blog. Anyway, I finished The Sugar Queen while here at the hospital and found it to be a delightful, cute read. Maybe give it a try.

  8. Oh I hate it when I can't seem to settle down with any book. Hope you find a good one soon.

I have The Musician's Daughter on my radar. That looks like a great book. And, I get the feeling Trapido could be an author I'd probably enjoy a lot. Someone told me her books are a bit reminiscent of Barbara Pym and Anita Brookner.

  9. I'll answer everyone's comments later tonight, but I have to jump ahead and respond to Stephanie's!

Stephanie - I'm so glad your surgery went well. You must be feeling pretty good to be up and on the computer. :) I'm so happy for you. I remember how sore and tired my brother was after his cancer surgery - a bit different than yours - but, nonetheless, it's emotionally draining and I'm just so happy to hear from you. Thank you for posting your comment! I've been thinking about you and wondering how it all went.

And... I'm glad to hear that The Sugar Queen is a good read. I enjoyed her first novel, so I'll have to give this one a try sometime soon. You know, I still have that cooking memoir you sent me -- and, no, I haven't read it yet. Maybe I'll pack that for my upcoming getaway to St. Louis. I need to do better with reading those gifted books, you know?

Anyhow, this is a long-winded response to your comment. I would've sent it via email, but since you don't have access, I'll just assume you'll pop back over here and see what I've written. Take good care, Steph! Be gentle with yourself in the days ahead. Hugs to you.

  10. I did pop back over - thanks, as always, for your kind comments. I'll be able to check my e-mail when I'm home over the weekend. And read that cooking memoir (I forgot that I sent it your way)! It's an entertaining book!!

P.S. I requested The Help from my library, but haven't gotten it yet. I'm really looking forward to reading that one!

  11. Obsessed Reader - I think I've pulled out of the slump. My current book is keeping my interest, so all is good again. BTW, welcome to blogging! :)

Raidergirl3 - It's definitely an addictive read. I can hardly wait for the sequel to come out!! I may have to re-read The Hunger Games in late August just to prepare myself for the next book.

Melanie - I'm out of mine, too! Finally. Only took a couple of weeks. Sheesh.

Heather - That's right, you read it, too! I wonder what it is about that book that causes slumpiness? ;)

Um, ya, about that Twitter thing. ;) I signed up after I saw that Bookfool is tweeting, got all kinds of people to follow, and turned around and decided to delete my account. Just don't need another reason to be addicted/chained to this computer. Did the same thing with Facebook a couple of months ago. Call me Luddite! :)

Kailana - Apparently not! I'm hearing this more and more. I wonder what it is about the book that causes everyone to have a hard time settling into something else once they've finished? Maybe the intensity of the read? It is quite addictive and fast-paced. Hope you get to it soon. It's fantastic!

Kim - I usually have a couple every year, but this one seemed to last a bit longer than usual I'm out, so all is good again.

Iliana - I've found a good one - a memoir - so all is good again. I'm actually almost finished, so I need to pick a few out to take on our little getaway this week.

I'll check with my mom to see if she wants the Trapido book back. If not, I'd be more than happy to send it down to you. I'll let you know.

  12. Stephanie - I'm throwing that cooking memoir in my suitcase! We're off to St. Louis for a few days and it sounds like one I'll be able to pick up and set down without too much interruption to the flow of the narrative (always important for vacations).

You are going to love The Help. At least I think you will! My book group chose it for next month's discussion. I can't wait!

Hope you're doing well. I owe you an email with some answers to your questions. I'll try to get to that before we leave.

  13. Don't you hate a slump?! Agh! They're worse than the flu. It's a bad, bad day when I can't find a book to grab me.

  14. I'm coming here late, so I know you're out of your slump -- or, at least, you got to read something great (hope you don't get all slumpy, again).

Thanks so much for passing on one of your rejects. It's good to be loved. :)

  15. Bellezza - I'm out of the slump! Finished a book while in St. Louis these past few days and started in on another. All is good. :)

Nancy - Yep, the slump is history. :) Of course, now I'm behind with my reviews again. ;)
