Post-Apocalyptic Endcap

I set a new endcap at work this week. I'd been planning to do this for quite some time, but really wanted to wait until I had read all the books displayed. I finally came to the conclusion that it may be a year (at least!) before I actually get all of these read, so I went ahead and put up the display. Hopefully, I can still hand sell a bunch of these books, based on what I already know about them.

Click on the titles for more information. The red titles are books I've read. (Some are reviewed on this blog.) The green titles are those I hope to read.

Canticle for Liebowitz is on my TBR pile, too.

  2. What a great idea for an endcap! I've definitely got a thing for post-apocalyptic books and have several of these on my TBR mountain. I'll be keeping this list for future reference! =)

  3. You haven't done one of these endcap posts for awhile. I just love them. They make me feel like I'm standing right there in the aisle giving these books a look over. There aren't any big bookstores in my little town and the little one that's here isn't run very well. It just doesn't have the come in, browse for hours feel that it used to under past ownership.

I must not gravitate towards post-apocalyptic fiction because I haven't read any of the ones on your endcap. My daughter just reread Hunger Games and is strongly encouraging (hounding) me to read it. I will sometime. Another one I want to read is The Brief History of the Dead. I saw the movie I Am Legend and think I'll call that good.

Keep sharing those fun endcaps, Les. Love 'em.

  4. The Hunger Games is fantastic. I just got the sequel, Catching Fire. Can't wait to pick it up!

  5. Those all look pretty interesting. My son has read quite a few of them and I'm sure he'd love to take all of the books home from that endcap!!

  6. What fun! I wish I worked in a bookstore just so I could do endcaps. :D

  7. Wordlily - I can't tell you how long I've had Canticle for Leibowitz in my stacks! It think I own my husband's ancient copy with a terrible cover. I'd love to get the nice new trade copy with Mary Doria Russell's intro (I loved her book The Sparrow - have you read it?). So, I simply must read this next. No more excuses! :)

Megan - I've been working on this list for a couple of years. There are some really good books on it that I can't wait to read and I'll probably spend a big chunk of September and October working my way through them so I can handsell them to customers without feeling like an idiot for my ignorance.

Booklogged - It has been a while, hasn't it? I had my Top Ten for 2008 up forever! It was doing so well, my boss didn't want me to take it down. :) I set another with a bunch of my recent favorites, but since I've been reviewing those, I decided to skip posting about it. Plus, I swap out titles every week or so. I do have another that I'll share with you in the coming days. I'm really excited about it and hope it does well.

It's too bad the store in your area aren't run very well. Have you ever considered opening one yourself? :)

The Hunger Games is a very quick read; it's so addictive. I think I'm in the minority, though, about my thoughts on the sequel. Just didn't do it for me. Of course, I'll probably wind up reading the 3rd just to see how it all ends.

I hate to tell anyone not to waste their time on a book, but I think you can skip I Am Legend. I really didn't care too much for it. But the movie was great, wasn't it?! I'd like to watch it again. Will Smith was fantastic.

    Thanks for your lovely comment.

Tammy - I agree with you about The Hunger Games, but as you might know if you read my review, I really didn't like Catching Fire nearly as well. I'm in the minority, though, so you'll probably love it as much as everyone else. Let me know!

Staci - Well, maybe you can surprise him with a few new titles for Christmas. Amazon is just a click away (via the hyperlinks I've provided). :)

Eva - I have so much fun in my store. Creating new endcaps is one of my favorite jobs. My sister-in-law works with me and we have so much fun handselling our favorites.

I have yet to finish The Stand; every time I get halfway through, I give up in fear. What a big baby I am about horror. I loved Robert McCammon's story about the boy (can I remember the name? Boy's Life?), and I've been wanting to read Hunger Games since you last reviewed it. This would be a great source for people participating in Carl's RIP IV Challenge, too.

  9. I loved A Canticle for Liebowitz and I occasionally get in a post-apocalyptic fiction mood -- you gave me new books -- thanks!

  10. Bellezza - And I've yet to re-read it! I really want to since it's been YEARS since I first read it and I don't remember a lot of the details anymore. I loved Boy's Life (McCammon) and want to read it again, too. Hunger Games is quite good, but not one I'd re-read. :)

Katya - I think I remember (from previous posts) that you really loved A Canticle For Leibowitz. Must. Find. More. Time!

  11. Les: I did and it was Mary Doria Russell who persuaded me to read it. I heard her at ALA and she had written that introduction to the new paperback so she talked about how much she loved it, so I decided to read it.

  12. Katya - I love that new printing of A Canticle for Leibowitz. My copy is ancient and I keep meaning to sit down and read Mary's intro in the newer version. However, I'm a little weird. I generally like to read intros after reading the book. Guess I should get on the ball and read it!
