Bad mistake. I, too, started a journal of my trip but it did not take first place the way that Sue's journal did. I took in every inch of Italy and was not so preoccupied that I let my turning 70 take one moment away from my experiences. Sue needs to get a grip on her life and live life to the fullest. I was very bored but had to read to the end as the book was a selection for my book club. I got nothing from the book but the whines!! The many blessings taht Sue has in her life were down played and all she saw was her pity parties. I know why Ann went into depression with a mother that was so selfserving.
I do not recommend reading this book especially if you have your own problems. I am a woman that is proud of being who I am and proud of the women that were before me, some of them stay at home and some making history. I do not compare my life with them but enjoy my life each day, the good and the bad. Sue and Ann need a little push in that direction!
JoyJoy Parkernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22415234.post-65755415299498601362010-07-10T05:21:55.614-07:002010-07-10T05:21:55.614-07:00Pam - I think this was my first audio memoir and i...Pam - I think this was my first audio memoir and it won't be my last. You listen to a lot of audio books, don't you? I may hit you up for recommendations one of these days. You know, when I can't find a thing to read. Ha!

Diane - I wonder if the printed format was any better. It went to 50% off very quickly at B&N.

Staci - Yeah. It was just one of those "meh" reads. Honestly, if she'd written about Italy, I might have fallen in love with it.

I eventually got used to Sue's reading voice, but it took a while!

Andi - I didn't take the time to search for other blog reviews for this one and now I'm curious what other readers thought. I'll definitely want to read your review once you've had a chance to read the book. The nice thing about listening on audio is I don't feel like I wasted a chunk of time on a book that didn't wow me.

Nan - Yes, it makes sense to me. I've never expected my daughter to be an appendage, either, but I did find myself nodding in agreement with some of Sue's feelings about motherhood and the natural distance between one's grown child.Leshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08345657431432380804noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22415234.post-89870021923226722862010-07-08T15:04:05.801-07:002010-07-08T15:04:05.801-07:00Oh, yuck. I just don't think stuff like that is anybody's business, but I'm clearly in the minority in these days where everybody tells every perfect stranger all about themselves. It almost seems like it is a way of making themselves seem real. Does that make any sense to you? And I've never been one of those mothers who expected or wanted my children to be appendages. I have always accepted them as their own people with their own views and opinions. I see way too many people who want their kids to think the same way and live the same life as they do. My goodness I'm opinionated! :<)Nanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15547916206007733970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22415234.post-65234986160469838142010-07-06T13:34:39.991-07:002010-07-06T13:34:39.991-07:00Sorry to see that this one didn't work out so ...Sorry to see that this one didn't work out so well. I have it on my TBR (story of my life!) and will certainly get to it one of these days. It's one of many food/travel-related books. If I'd put it on one of my main bookshelves in sight I'd probably get to it sooner.Andihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05220718933942181809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22415234.post-74845659630912638272010-07-04T19:16:52.273-07:002010-07-04T19:16:52.273-07:002.5...and I see that you didn't hate it but it...2.5...and I see that you didn't hate it but it just wasn't fantastic.
