Today
Today I'm flying low and I'm
not saying a word.
I'm letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep.
The world goes on as it must,
the bees in the garden rumbling a little,
the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten.
And so forth.
But I'm taking the day off.
Quiet as a feather.
I hardly move though really I'm traveling
a terrific distance.
Stillness. One of the doors
into the temple.
~Mary Oliver
Oh, Mary Oliver. So wonderful. Thank you for this.
ReplyDeleteWasn't she a wonderful poet, Nan? I just love this one. I'm glad you enjoyed it, too.
DeleteSo lovely! This is a perfect reminder for me right now. Hope you all are enjoying summer!
ReplyDeleteLaurel, I scheduled these posts so my blog wouldn't go into hibernation while we are on our road trip and it's been fun to see them pop up with comments as the weeks go by. We are enjoying our summer, thus far, but it is far too hot! We are in central California where tomorrow's forecast is for 112. We've grown far too used to the cool summer days on the Oregon coast and triple digits (especially in an RV) are not much fun. At least we're moving tomorrow and will be in a fully shaded campground until next Thursday.
DeleteOh I especially love the stanza that starts "But I'm taking the day off..." I need to add this one to my journal. Thank you for sharing this poem!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a wonderful poem, Iliana. I love that stanza, too!
DeleteI'll be looking for Mary Oliver now. I like this one.
ReplyDeleteTina, I have found some real gems in Mary Oliver's books. Enjoy!
DeleteOh my. I need to write that one down. Thank you, Les.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Deb. Glad you enjoyed it.
