To join the challenge simply read any books (or view any movies) of your choice from the above categories between September 1 – October 31st. Feel free to post about them on your blog, Instagram, or Twitter. You can use #RIPXVI or tag @PERILREADERS to connect with other participants.
I've chosen several mysteries and thrillers from my shelves, both in print and on audio. I love participating in reading challenges since it's a way to focus on a select group of books that I already own.
Have you read any of these? Are there any that I should skip?
Les, looks like you have some good reads a head. I read a couple of these so I hope they all work out. I always look forward to this challenge and the list process.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diane. I chose a lot of books that have been on my shelves for quite a while. I've already abandoned three and am not too thrilled with either one of the ones I'm reading/listening to, but I'll stick with those two for a little bit longer. Like you, I love the list process. :)
DeleteI haven't read any of these books, but would like to listen to In the Market for Murder... the first book in the series was so much fun on audio! Enjoy the challenge and I'll be watching for your reviews.
ReplyDeleteMarket for Murder was ok, JoAnn, but not nearly as humorous as the first installment to the series. As I told Diane, I've already ditched three of the books from this selection. At least I'm clearing off my shelves. Slowly!
DeleteI've read A Reliable Wife, A Finer End, and The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley. I like Jane Harper and still have The Survivors on my list.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your remarks, Jenclair. Sadly, I couldn't get interested in A Reliable Wife, so I set it aside. And... A Finer End was my least favorite book of Crombie's. I'm listening to The Survivors and so far, it's just ok. I'm hoping one of these books will be a winner!
DeleteI didn't want to say too much about A Reliable Wife, which was well-written, but not my thing. Wasn't that impressed with The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley, either, but I know a lot of people liked both of them. I did like A Finer End, although I wonder if I would now. I read it when it came out, but that was...a while ago!
DeleteThanks for sharing your opinion on these books, Jenclair. Honestly, none of these books except Falling are appealing to me. I just grabbed them off my shelves, hoping to make a dent in my TBR stacks. Some were ARCs and some came from library sales, I think. Maybe I'll wind up with one or two winners.
DeleteI have The Surviver but haven’t read it yet. Oooo, a new Horowitz!
ReplyDeleteTina, the Horowitz book was published in 2018, so not terribly new. I'm a few chapters into The Survivors and so far I'm not terribly impressed. I loved The Dry, but this one feels a little tedious.
DeleteI want to read all of these! Love that you are continuing with the Deborah Crombie books. I'm just now on my first R.I.P. read and can't wait to add more.
ReplyDeleteIliana, I have so many of Crombie's books stacked up to read and even though I didn't care for A Finer End, I'll keep on with the series. I know how some authors have winners and losers in one series, so I'm not holding it against Crombie for a dud. ;)
DeleteI completed the audiobook of Dennis Lehane's book Since We Fell in 2017. I went back & read my review and it appears I didn't care for it much ... which is too bad since Lehane has some good ones. But I haven't read any of these others that are on your list. I hope you enjoy. Perhaps I should make an RIP list?
ReplyDeleteOh dear, Susan. I loved Lehane's earlier books (Shutter Island and his Kenzie/Genaro series), but my husband wasn't impressed with Since We Fell, either. I'll still give it a try and maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
DeleteOh, I love your new header! What a luscious field of wildflowers!
ReplyDeleteRegarding the books…I have Since She Went Away, too, but as yet unread. I loved A Reliable Wife when I read it years ago, but Falling? Not so much. It had a very suspenseful beginning, and then I tired of the non-ending drama. (Interesting that it was released in the fall, close to 9-11…) Still, it was quite effective in that the author clearly knew what she was talking about from her years of experience as a flight attendant.
You have such a good selection of titles from which to choose!
P.s. I can never tell if my comment is coming to you since it says “Google Account” instead of my blog URL (dolcebellezza2.wordpress.com) Sorry if this is a duplicate!
Thanks, Meredith! Those wildflowers were in a field across from our campsite near Gold Beach (Oregon). We were only there one night as we were heading home from Northern CA, but what a view we had!
DeleteI remember (how is it that I do?!) that you loved A Reliable Wife, but sadly, I had to set it aside. After reading several pages, I simply couldn't get interested in the story.
BTW, I got both of your comments and just deleted the duplicate. No worries!
I've only read Survivors and Falling, both of which I really enjoyed. I don't know the rest of your choices so look forward to hearing what you think of them. Enjoy the challenge!
ReplyDeleteHelen, I'm currently listening to The Survivors and so far it's not winning me over as much as The Dry did. I'll keep listening, though. Maybe it's a slow burn.
DeleteVicki, I'm really looking forward to Falling. So far, none of these books have wowed me.
ReplyDeleteYou picked some good books for this. I did not plan this well on my end. All the books I want to read are held up at the library for whatever reason. It's never taking me this long to get a book on hold.
ReplyDeleteTi, well I thought I picked some good books, but so far I've only read one that I would consider a winner. I've given up on a few and a few others were duds, so we'll see how it goes in the next few weeks. Most of the books I chose were from my shelves and have been there a long time. I think the only one I got specifically for the challenge is Falling.
