Coming home dredges up deeply buried secrets...
Kieran Elliott's life changed forever on the day a reckless mistake led to devastating consequences.
The guilt that still haunts him resurfaces during a visit with his young family to the small coastal community he once called home.
Kieran's parents are struggling in a town where fortunes are forged by the sea. Between them all is his absent brother, Finn.
When a body is discovered on the beach, long-held secrets threaten to emerge. A sunken wreck, a missing girl, and questions that have never washed away...
Boring! I listened to this audiobook for almost two weeks, hoping it would improve the further along I got, but it continued to bore me to tears. I should have called it quits early on, but I enjoyed Jane Harper's previous mysteries and thought this one would be worth persevering. I read the print editions of The Dry and Force of Nature (click on titles for my reviews), so maybe I should have gone that route with this book. Stephen Shanahan's narration wasn't bad, but it did feel somewhat slow. I increased the playback speed, but even that didn't enhance the narrative. I will definitely get the print edition when I decide to read The Lost Man.
I received a complimentary copy from Libro.fm. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have never read this author. I tried the first book on audio but, the Australian accent wasn't a good fit for me so I returned it unread. Sorry this one was a snooze fest. I hope the print works out better.
ReplyDeleteDiane, I really enjoyed her earlier books and have high hopes for The Lost Man. I'll have to look and see who the reader was for The Dry. I read that one in print, but I wonder if it's the same man who read this one.
DeleteSo interesting. I liked The Dry, but didn't love Force of Nature. I would place The Survivors in between the two.
ReplyDeleteHelen, The Dry is definitely her best, but I'm still looking forward to The Lost Man.
DeleteOh no how disappointing. I've only read The Dry which I really loved and still need to get to Force of Nature. Have you watched the movie version of The Dry? I recommend it.
ReplyDeleteIliana, is The Dry a great read?! I did watch the movie and thought it was good, but as always, the book was better.
DeleteFirst of all, I think it is the same guy reading all her books. That's my memory anyway. I've read all of them and I will say that I liked The Dry and Force of Nature better. I'd like to see Aaron Falk again. I did like The Lost Man, but again, no Aaron Falk. We discussed The Lost Man in mystery group and most liked it quite a bit as I recall. They discussed The Survivors at their recent September meeting. I read it as well and liked it, but I think much of my liking had to do with the setting, the sea, the caves, etc. Anyway, I recently finished Liane Moriarty's new book, Apples Never Fall, and am still considering what I'll say about it. Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteKay, I checked and you are right. The reader is the same. I liked his voice, but he just reads too slowly, imho. I hope Harper brings back Aaron Falk, who is a great character. I'll still give The Last Man a read (in print!) and see how I like it compared to the others.
DeleteJust finished The Madness of Crowds and am getting ready to share my review. :)
Ohh good to know. I started the audio but then put it aside ... within just the first 20 minutes so I didn't get far. I don't think I'll go back to it. Too many others things to read. It's too bad though, right?
ReplyDeleteSusan, I wouldn't bother going back to it. Personally, I wish I could get those hours in my life back!
DeleteI read Force of Nature and thought it was okay. So, I haven't picked up her others but boring I would not expect from her.
ReplyDeleteTi, my favorite so far is The Dry. I'm still looking forward to The Lost Man and I'll try whatever she writes next, although I'll go with print rather than audio.
