 Pelicans!

  1. Thanks, Vicki. These are all tightly cropped, so they're not as sharp as I'd like. It was thrilling to see so many pelicans hanging out in the cove. First time I've ever seen them there.

  2. Oh how pretty!! I don't think I've ever seen a pelican outside of a zoo. Great pictures! I did see what I think was an owl chasing a squirrel in our backyard the other day. I'm rooting for the owl because that squirrel has chewed up the cushions on my back porch chair. Plus, maybe Hogwarts needs me - do you think? LOL

    1. Thanks, Kay. We've been seeing A LOT of pelicans this past week. Much more than usual, I think. There was a huge flock just offshore a bit and I read that the birds were probably after a school of herring and anchovies. Very cool!

I've only seen an owl once or twice, so that must have been thrilling to see it chasing a squirrel! Keep us posted if you make it to Hogwarts. ;)

  3. Those are amazing; nice job. When we used to go to Aruba every year I loved to watch the pelicans scoop down and scoop up a fish and take off. Such sharp vision.

    1. Thanks so much, Diane. My old 35mm camera stopped working properly with the zoom lens, so these aren't quite as good as I'd like (taken with my phone). I love to watch the pelicans glide across the ocean, too. They have such synchronized formations!

  4. For a long time, we had no brown pelicans near us, but in recent years they have made a comeback.

Seeing all the water birds is one of the delights of living where we do. It makes up for all the hurricanes.

    1. Deb, I've never seen this many pelicans here at one time. In the four years we've lived here, I've spotted maybe a half dozen or so flying over the ocean, but never three times as many. And, I've never seen them congregate in the cove like they did the other day. It was a wonderful sight! Must mean there was a lot of fish (herring and anchovies) in the nearby waters. Yay!

  5. Oh, I love pelicans!! We have them flying across the bay in our backyard every evening, and one or two often stop for a while to relax on the dock. My dad used to feed them scraps when he was filleting fish on the dock. :-)

    1. Aren't they wonderful birds, Laurel?! I love how graceful they look as they fly together over the water. How fun to see them on your dock!

    1. They really are interesting birds, aren't they Susan? I could watch them for hours, too. We've been quite lucky to have so many around our area this summer. I don't think I've seen them more than once or twice in the past four years since we moved here. They've been here for quite a few weeks this summer, which delights me!
