Day One
Fernie turned out to be one of our favorite places on this epic trip to Canada. It reminded us of Bend, which is another town we enjoy visiting. We found ourselves saying, "We could live here!" on more than one occasion. I am Canadian, after all. It wouldn't take long to learn the metric system, although I did stumble when asked how many grams of deli meat I wanted when I innocently asked for half a pound. Of course, there's the issue of snow and cold weather, which we are over now that we live on the Oregon coast.
But back to Fernie. We arrived at the RV park after an uneventful drive south from Radium Hot Springs. We got set up, had a beer, then wandered around, checking out the facilities. Our site was huge with enough space for two RVs. The Elk River was just beyond the trees with a nice walking path alongside the river. Our site backed up to a big wildflower garden, which was pretty but my allergies kicked in by the second day. I rarely have problems with allergies, but there was definitely something irritating my nose!
We drove into town and got lunch at the Fernie Taphouse, which had great fish & chips and fish tacos! After our lunch, we wandered around town, stopping in Polar Peek Books. I bought Bittersweet by Susan Cain, which is our book club selection for this coming November.
I think I could live there, too. I am going to try to closely follow your Canadian trip. I'm also going to share a link to it with my husband. I want us to plan a trip to Canada. Maybe we will copy parts of your trip!
ReplyDeleteDeb, I'm so glad you are thinking about taking a trip to Canada. We loved exploring Alberta and British Columbia. I'd love to go back. Feel free to copy any parts of this trip! :)
DeleteWhat a lovely town (and the bookstore!!) and spot to spend some time. A good river (actually, for me, any body of water) really makes the scene.
ReplyDeleteHelen, I love walkable towns like Fernie. I hope we get the opportunity to return before too long.
DeleteGlad you liked Fernie. We have spent sometime there but mostly on the way going somewhere else (usually the Nelson area). I don't have a handle on it ... but it has some ski lifts and seems dry in the summers. Good it has a bookstore.
ReplyDeleteSusan, it's a quaint little town. Good shops, restaurants, and a wonderful (small) farmer's market. It was pretty hot & humid when we were there.
DeleteUm, that book store and those fish and chips. Heaven.
ReplyDeleteTi, it was a nice little bookstore. Fish & chips (and fish tacos) tend to be our go-to when we're traveling. Not sure why since we live on the coast and can get both at home! ;)
DeleteA site large enough for two RVs sounds like heaven! Since we have to be within 30 minutes of whichever hospital Luis is working in, we always end up in city RV parks and they cram all the long-term renters in tightly.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to Fernie but my sister and I did stay in Radium Hot Springs on our way to Banff from Idaho. We enjoyed soaking in the springs. I also tried a spruce beer soda there. The lady taking my order told me it tastes like Christmas and she was exactly right. It was surprisingly good and didn't taste like Pine-Sol!
Your pictures are beautiful! I love that part of the world but don't think I could handle their winters.
Jen, we've stayed in a few of those kind of RV parks. Hope the noise level isn't too terrible. Fernie is great, but I agree. I don't think I could handle their winters. That's one of the reasons we were happy to move out of Nebraska! Hmmm, spruce beer soda sounds interesting... :)
