Publisher's Blurb:

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life's complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly's orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what's happening, Molly's unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it's too late?

A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

The Maid is another book I'd heard good things about, and after slogging through weeks of The Nix, I was ready for something lighter. Lauren Ambrose does an excellent job as narrator, delivering crisp, precise articulation that perfectly matches Molly's personality. Molly views the world in absolutes, interpreting instructions literally, but as the story progresses, she learns that life isn't always black and white. It didn't take long for me to get hooked, but the middle section of the mystery began to drag and I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue. I did finish, and while the final chapters were more engaging, the book never fully won me over. Overall, I wasn't enthralled, and I doubt I'll continue with the series.

  1. I liked it well enough (3.5-ish) but didn't continue on with the series. Molly had some interesting things going for her .... but I can understand that it had some ups & downs.

    1. Susan, it was brain candy, and not a series with which I intend to go further.

  2. My daughter and sister read all of these books, but I haven't been inspired to give them a try. I did just start Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers and that has been a lighter diversion so far.

    1. JoAnn, I can see giving the first book a listen, but I have no desire to keep going. A little to light and predictable... Glad you're enjoying the Vera Wong book.

    1. Deb, this seems to be the consensus. No, I don't plan to read more by this author. Too many other books calling to me that sound more promising.
