Robert Frost

Carl's G.I.F.T. Challenge Post #1

The recent poetry meme has got me thinking about more of my favorite poems. I gave my husband a pretty children's book edition of Frost's poem several years ago for Christmas, as it's also one of his favorites.

Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there's some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

  1. I can't even believe you posted this. Yes, I can, actually. I woke up this morning thinking of it. Robert Frost is my all time favorite, and I love the mood he creates with this poem. I always see my father in it somewhere.

Thanks for reading my mind. Thanks for posting this fabulous, fabulous poem. I'm already uplifted.

My kindergarten teacher got me this and the NIght Before Christmas for a present and I always cherished those reads to this day.

I love this book! Jeffers' illustrations are not only fittingly beautiful, but they give the poem so many more layers of meaning.

  6. Bellezza - OK, this is getting a bit creepy! I should think of something really bizarre about myself and see if you share that preference (for instance, I don't like to drink coffee right after it's been poured, but wait for it too cool down to just above the lukewarm temp). We do seem to have a lot in common though, don't we?

I'm glad you enjoyed reading the poem. Do you have a copy of this particular book? It is so pretty. Lovely illustrations.

Heather - Great idea! Let's see now. I've signed up for 4, maybe 5 challenges. I need a secretary! ;)

Nessie - What a sweet teacher! How lovely to have something so special to remember her by. Did the other children get the same or were you singled out for a reason? I remember receiving a pretty little heart-shaped porcelain dish with a geranium painted on the lid from my 3rd grade teacher (Mrs. Bauer - Ha! I even remember her name after all these years!). I can't remember if it was a Christmas gift or something she gave me on the last day of school. Looking back (and of course, back then) I think it was a very sweet thing for her to do. She was my favorite elementary school teacher.

Renee - That's what drew me to the book. The gorgeous illustrations and the vellum (?) cover.

Carl - I wondered if you got snow. And just the other day you made a comment on your blog that I'd probably get snow before you! Ha! ;) wicked smile

Of course it is in the 60's now which does not feel very Christmas-like. I hope the predictions of snow for next week come true!
