November Reading Challenge Results

I knew I wouldn't get through all thirteen books I posted here, but I did hope to read at least half. I should know better than to set any goals for November & December. There's always lots going on, keeping me from my usual reading routine. I did read a couple of very good books, however, and I'm glad I was able to knock a four off my TBR list. Thanks for the nudge to read some war-related books, Kailana! It was great fun.

Here are the final results:

1. Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally
2. Birdsong: A Novel of Love and War by Sebastian Faulks
3. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien FINISHED A+
4. Pastoral by Nevil Shute
5. Night Watch by Sarah Waters FINISHED A-
6. Obsaban by Joy Kogawa FINISHED C
7. Land Girls by Angela Huth FINISHED B+
8. In Country by Bobbie Ann Mason
9. When the Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe
10. Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose
11. A Day of Infamy by Walter Lord
12. Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher
13. A Very Long Engagement by Sebastien Japrisot

  1. I strongly recommend that if you get the chance to, read A Very Long Engagement. :) Awesome book.

I am glad that you enjoyed the challenge. I intend to have it again next year, so keep that in mind.

Oh, and I bought Night Watch as a result of this challenge, so I am not sure it helped my to be read pile!

Les, I've added The Things The Carried, Night Watch and Land Girls to my list. I don't know whether to thank you or not! JK I always appreciate suggestions for good books. It does feel good to whittle away at the list and read some that have been lingering for a long time, doesn't it. Good for you.

  3. Hey, Booklogged. If you want my copy of Land Girls, I'd be more than happy to send it to you. I enjoyed it, but doubt I'll ever read it again. Just to warn you, though, I got it at a library sale, so it has the clear cover over the jacket. If you do want it, send me an email with your snail-mail address and I'll get it off to you. You can find my email in my profile.

    Hi, Les

I think you've done very well actually! I have been meaning to read "Obasan" for the longest time, but now that I've read your review, I'm not that eager to promote it to the top of my TBR pile. Perhaps I'll give it a try once I'm done with some of the challenges. I have "When the Elephants Dance" on my book shelf, so I will be eagerly awaiting your thoughts on it.

  5. Kailana - Don't worry. I'll get to A Very Long Engagement as soon as possible. I have the movie in my queue over at Netflix, but want to read the book first. That will help keep it on the top of my stacks!

I hope you do hold the challenge again next year. There's nothing like a good challenge to help move those books (unless, like you, more books keep getting added!).

Lotus - I should get on the ball and read When the Elephants Dance. I have an ARC and it's probably not only out in hardcover, but paperback by now! I'll keep you posted. If you ever decide you do want to read Obasan, let me know and I can send you my copy. I don't plan to keep it, so it's yours if you're interested.

That's very generous of you, Les, thank you!

I have the hardcover edition of "When the Elephants Dance" and it's been languishing on my shelf for about 2 years now or maybe more...I really should get to it soon!
