Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
Young Adult Fiction
Finished on 3/1/07
Rating: 4/5 (Very good)

I can’t imagine there’s anyone who hasn’t heard of the Harry Potter series, even if they’ve been living under a rock for the past decade. The media attention has been far too wide-spread for even those individuals wishing to escape the news to miss out on the excitement centered around Harry, Hogwarts and the magical world of wizards. So there’s really no need to summarize the story, is there?

This was my second reading of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and it was just as entertaining, if not more so, than the first time around nearly eight years ago. I was a little concerned that I'd be bored with the all-too-familiar story, but enough time had passed and I'd forgotten quite a few of the details.

With the upcoming release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (on July 21st), I hope to re-read all the books in this series. Well, with the exception of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Those will be first-reads since I never got around to them when they were first published. I just lost interest, but now I'm excited to revisit Harry and his pals at Hogwarts. Nice to know I'm off to a good start!

I am so jealous. If I had more time I would re-read all the books too. By the way, my favorites were the first book AND the Half-Blood Prince. ENJOY!

  2. I'm hoping that after the last book is published that a nice boxed set will be made available and then I can read all the books together! I look forward to that. hmmm perhaps tonight I'll watch the movie (the first one).

  3. I love this series - I've read the first two a couple of times, and the last one I read was Goblet of Fire - I need to watch that movie and then I'll go on to #5

I'm not ashamed to say I've re-read (well, re-listened) to all of these more times than I can count. This is a fantastic series that I will be sad to see end. However, I can't wait until my girls are old enough to share it with them. I would have to say that #5 is probably my favorite.

  6. I am probably the only person in the world who doesn't care for the books. :<) Surprise, surprise, right, Les?! I did make it through the first one. I have watched a few of the movies, and like some parts a lot, like those moving cards, and the Weasley (sp?) family. My daughter has read them all, over and over, and listened to the Stephen Fry readings. He is fantastic. This is what I put in my book journal:

"I listened to the book several years ago, but this is my first time reading the print version. I much prefer the original British title of Philosopher's Stone probably because of Van Morrison's song. I enjoyed the book, but I don't think I'll be reading any others. It just isn't my favorite type of literature. I think Harry should be more protected at Hogwarts. I also wish there were more girls as main characters. Good twist
    at the end."

  7. Stephanie - There are so many books I keep saying and I want to re-read and I've finally decided to try to allow for one re-reading every month. Of course, the next 5 months are going to be devoted to the Harry Potter series...

Heather - I've splurged and went ahead and bought all the books in hardcover as they were released. I figured my grandchilden might like to read them some day and the hardcovers would hold up better than the trade paperbacks.

SuziQ - I've only watched one of the movies. It was pretty good, but I prefer the books.

Jen - I can just picture Maddie when she's about 8 years old, staying up until 2 a.m. reading these books. She'll love 'em. I wonder about Emily, though. There aren't any ballerinas! ;)

Nat - At least they're fairly quick reads!

Nan - Not surprising at all. ;) I've enjoyed them, but I don't think they're ALL great.
