Guess Who Came For Dinner?

1,272 miles -- approximately 20 hours (roundtrip from Fort Worth to Lincoln)

3 tanks of gas -- $150

Dinner for 3 (instead of the original 2!) -- $75

Surprise visitor for Mother's Day Weekend -- Priceless!

You will never be free again.
You live two lives now,
hers and your own.
And the greatest pain is having to let
her make her own choices --
whatever your experience foretells.
Mercifully, this life link carries
happiness as well as heartache. You
are allowed to touch her joys, to
share the triumphs and excitements.
Distance cannot divide you. There
will be nights without sleep. Days of
waiting for a word. But letters.
Unexpected phone calls. The
astonishment of her standing on the
doorstep when you thought her half
a world away. And happiness
beyond anything you ever thought
possible. Surprises. Amazement.
For she is your diamond daughter.
She can cut across your
heart and mind.

  8. What a wonderful surprise - the best gift of all. And what a pretty daughter you have. I don't know if you are interewted but we had our Mother's Day here in Uk in March and I posted a Stephen Spender poem for my 22 year daughter on my blog.

Ahhh Les - this is just wonderful beyond words! My, what a long way to drive by herself! Probably a good thing you didn't know - then you couldn't worry (cause I would have worried big time - LOL)!

    Happy Mother's Day!

  11. What a dear, dear thing for her to do. Just so kind and thoughtful. And that's a really nice passage. Where did you happen to read it? One could as easily use son, too. How long can Amy stay?

  13. Thanks everyone! It was a great (albeit short) visit. She arrived on Thursday afternoon and had to head back on Sunday around noon. I was just so thrilled to have her here. It was a great surprise!

Nan - I don't recall where I found that passage. I have a xerox copy on my bulletin board and I think it's been there for many, many years.

  15. Stephanie - Thanks. I can't tell you how many times I'm taken aback by her beauty. She has such a sense for fashion and style and always looks regal and sophisticated. Can a mother be proud of her own daughter's beauty?

It was truly the best Mother's Day I have ever had. I am blessed.

  18. Les,

I just tagged you for a very, very short meme because I'm nice and decided not to tag you for the long one. Don't you appreciate me?

Don't feel obligated; I know you're short on time. :)

I'm so glad you had such a wonderful surprise for Mother's Day, Les! Such a beautiful girl and such a lovely poem to express what our daughters mean to us.

Several months back you posted the billboard that Amy is featured on. It's right down the street from my house and I see it almost every day and think of you. It's such a lovely addition to my neighborhood landscape!

  20. Janet - I can't believe that billboard is still up!! It's been over a year (March '06).
