Bookworm Award

Janet from Joyful Jottings and Kim from Page After Page have both tagged me (oh, two-and-a-half weeks ago!) for the Bookworm Award meme. Here are the details:

Open the closest book to you, not your favorite or most intellectual book, but the book closest to you at the moment, to page 56. Write out the fifth sentence, as well as two to five sentences following there. Pass this on to five blogging friends.

The following quote is from Richard Russo's Bridge of Sighs.

He preferred a baseball game, if there was one, some other sporting event, if there wasn't. He gave me to understand that professional wrestling was fake, but this in no way diminished his appreciation of it. He wasn't much interested in the shows my mother liked—dramas like the Philco Television Playhouse—but offered no objection to her watching them, snoring peacefully in his armchair when he did.

I've only just started the book, but like all the others I've read by Russo, this has great potential!!

Thanks for the tag, ladies. I'm willing to bet most of you have already participated in this meme. If not, consider yourself tagged!

  4. JoAnn - Glad you tagged yourself for this meme. It one of the easier ones that doesn't require too much time. I still have one more to write up.

I've set Bridge of Sighs aside for my other current read. I'm loving it, so I'm sure I'll finish in another day or two and get back to Russo's book. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Lorraine - Sorry to hear you deleted your book blog, but I'll still visit your others, don't worry! Thanks for the French lesson. :)

Katya - Oh, good! Glad to hear it's a winner.

  5. I bought The Bridge Of Sighs a few months ago, but like so many other books I've not opened it yet! I just may, once I get a chance to sit down. Decorate the tree. Make some Christmas cookies. Finish my shopping. Sweep up the Henry fur...

  6. Bridge of Sighs has been one of my books-in-waiting for a very long time.
Maybe, based on the comments here, I should move it closer to the top of the stack.

  7. Great post Les! This was a fun award/meme. I did a couple of weeks ago--my book was A Christmas Carol by Dickens.
I have never read anything by Russo but have Empire Falls on my reading list for this year as part of the Pulitzer Challenge I am participating in. I have had that book for a while--but it is so long and daunting looking!

I am still working through my 600 page Dollmaker--because of that book's length my reading totals for December are going to be paltry! ;)
    Have a great Tuesday...

  8. Bellezza - Ah, the Henry fur. Sounds a bit like my house and all the Annie fur. I have plain sheets covering our guest room beds since Annie likes to sleep in all the rooms. Rather than try to clean the comforters, it's easier to shake the sheets out (outside) and then throw those in the wash. Same with our couch. It's covered with a sheet. I take it off when I'm expecting company. Otherwise, surprise visitors see how we really like. ;) The things we do for our beloved pets.

My shopping is about finished. I'll probably do a little baking in the next week or so. No Christmas tree or decorations this year. Just a few snowmen scattered about in the living room.

Have you read any of Russo's books? I love his writing. I get drawn into the world of his characters and come away feeling like I've made new friends.

Christina (Endnotes) - I've had my copy since last Christmas. It always feels a bit odd to own the hardcover (unread) when the paperback has been out for several months!

Kim - Glad you enjoyed the meme. It is fun AND easy! :)

Oh, Empire Falls is a wonderful book!! I tried to watch the movie and was bored to tears, but the book is an all-time favorite. Don't let the page-count scare you off. The pages really do fly in this one.

  9. Bellezza - That would be "see how we really live"
