Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday is the place for bloggers to share the books that arrived in their homes last week.

I don't know if I've ever mentioned it here before or not, but my mom's a voracious reader. She loves books just as much as I do. And she's so sweet and generous, passing her books on to me once she's finished. After our trip out to see her in Oregon last month, a box arrived full of these wonderful books. Aren't I lucky?!

Click on the titles for more information.

by Carol Shields and Blanche Howard

The House at Riverton
by Kate Morton

Moira's Crossing
by Christina Shea

Life Class
by Pat Barker

Run
by Ann Patchett

People of the Book

Thank you, Mom! I can't wait to read all of these great books. I love you.

  2. Wonderful, Les. I remember when I was in college, my mother would read some of the books I did in class. Long, long time ago. I miss her every single day.

Have you read the other Richard Jury books? Should they be read in order? I have read a couple over the years and bought the first to begin the series in earnest 'sometime.'

  3. You are lucky! A couple of these are on my TBR list as well.

And I second, People of the Book is fabulous!

  4. What a wonderful treat to receive in the mail every once in awhile from your mom. I love reading a book that my mom has read and recommends. It's like traveling to a place she's been. It's always fun to discuss them with her after reading. Aren't we lucky to have moms who have fostered the love of reading?

  5. Heather - Good to know. I enjoyed Year of Wonders, but wouldn't say I loved it. My sister-in-law really enjoyed People of the Book, too. Hmmm, now which stack should I move it to? Read NOW or Read ASAP or Read THIS YEAR. ;)

Nan - I'm sure you miss her terribly. She must've been a wonderful woman. She raised such a lovely daughter. :)

I haven't read any Richard Jury books. I have several Martha Grimes mysteries (from my mom!), but haven't begun reading any of them. Shame on me, I know! So, to answer your question, I have no idea if they should be read in order.

Holdenj - Yes, I know. I'm very lucky. My mom and I swap books (from Oregon to Nebraska, mind you!) quite often. Glad to know People of the Book is such a winner. Definitely moving it toward the top of the stack.

Booklogged - It's a great treat. Almost like Christmas, although this time I knew what was in the box since I picked the books out while we were visiting last month. :) Yes, we are very lucky to have mothers who shared their love of reading with us. I can only hope that my daughter becomes more interested as she gets older. She reads occasionally, but not like my mom and I.

  6. How fantastic to be able to share books with your mum. I don't think I have ever even seen my mother reading!

I liked the Kate Morton book, and I am really looking forward to her next book.

  11. Oh lucky you getting all these books! I've not read any of them but have a couple of my shelves.

I don't think I've heard of that particular Carol Shields book though. Hmm, must investigate :)

  12. Marg - I've never NOT seen my mom reading. Glad to hear the Morton book is good. I tried her new one (The Forgotten Garden), but couldn't get interested.

Kelly - She is awesome! I probably have over a hundred books here that she's passed along to me. Even better, she never nags me to hurry up and read them. ;)

Kailana - People of the Book is one of the five finalists for our One Book - One Lincoln selection for 2009. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Farrah - You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by!

    Katya - Only half? :)

Iliana - Hey! Are you back in the States?! I need to pop over to your blog. Looks like you had a fabulous trip.

I'm not a big fan of Shields (didn't really care for The Stone Diaries), but this one sounds interesting.

    Welcome home!

  13. How nice to get a box of books from your mom! I read A Celibate Season ages ago. I found the process interesting, how they each wrote one side of the story. Can't remember much about it though now.

  14. Nat - It's very nice. She either sends me a bunch or brings them when they come visit.

It looks like A Celibate Season has an interesting literary device/process and that's what drew me to it. I hope I like it better than The Stone Diaries.
