Mailbox Monday

I didn't get a chance to post last Monday, so I have a couple of weeks' worth of books to share with you.

Click on the titles for more information.

Abandoned: A Thriller
by Cody McFadyen
Tentative On-Sale Date: October 27, 2009

This one just arrived today and I'm so excited!! I've corresponded with Cody on and off since reading the first in this series (Shadow Man) and was thrilled to receive an unsolicited ARC from his publicist. And what perfect timing. I finished my current read today during lunch and will start in on Abandoned tonight. Thanks, Cody!

The Brutal Telling
by Louise Penny

I've only read the first in this series, but hope to get to the rest later this fall. I snagged this ARC at work in hopes that it will motivate me to get back to Quebec and Chief Inspector Gamache.

Another ARC from work. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio version of Julie & Julia a few years ago, but I decided not to reread it for a recent book club meeting. However, a bunch of us went to see the movie and I loved, loved, loved it! That will definitely be a dvd I buy as soon as it's released. Nora Ephron rocks! But back to this new release. How could I resist a culinary memoir? Even one with a focus on butchery. Hmmm. Could be interesting.

Little Monsters
by Charles Lambert

This arrived last week from my mom. It sounds like an exceptional novel, and yet one that could possibly be quite difficult to read. The first sentence reads: When I was thirteen, my father killed my mother.

Testimony
by Anita Shreve

Another one from my mom. I've read a few of Shreve's novels, but none have impressed me as much as Fortune's Rocks, which I loved. I keep hoping... (Thanks, Mom!)

I don't think I have to tell you how jealous I am about your ARC of Cody's new book. You're so lucky. Does it say when it will be coming out?

  3. I love the cover of Abandoned. If I decide to read this, do I need to read the other one you mentioned first?

  5. I know. I haven't found a Shreve I have loved as much as Fortune's Rocks either!

Little Monsters looks good. I look forward to your review!

  7. Hi Les! I received Abandoned and The Brutal Telling, as well. YAY! I started reading The Brutal Telling (75 pages) when Abandoned arrived and I couldn't stay away from it, so I temporarily put down TBT. I felt a little bad, especially because I was thoroughly enjoying it, but . . . Anyway, I'm almost done - hope to finish it today. The cover says not to post any reviews until the publishing date, so I will verify that before I do so. If it's best to not post, please e-mail me when you are done. I'm extremely curious to know your thoughts.

Little Monsters sounds like an intriguing book. It's not easily accessible. :( Where did your mom get it. The only place I saw it at was The Book Depository.

I thought Testimony was very good. I hope you enjoy it.

  8. Hey Les, you may want to read the Louise Penny books in order - since there are connections and threads that continue. I really liked the first book and so, so sadly didn't like the others so have quit. :<(

  10. It's interesting you should say that Fortune's Rocks is your favorite Shreve novel; of course, it is mine, too. I liked it far better than any of her others, although The Pilot's Wife had its compelling moments.

  11. I agree with Nan that it's better to read the Louise Penny books in order. I've read 3 so far and love them all. I especially like #3.

Maybe I have time to read Shadowman before Abandoned comes out.

I'm interested to hear your reactions to the others on your list. They all sound good.

  12. Purpleg8r - Glad to hear it's a winner by so many. Thanks for stopping by.

Jen - You can borrow my copy when I'm finished. It's going very quickly and I should be done by the end of the week. It's not due out until October 27th.

Katya - Isn't that a cool cover? If you decide to read it, you really should start at the beginning of the series. Start with Shadow Man, followed by Face of Death and then go on to The Darker Side. Abandoned is the 4th in the series.

Wendi B - I like the cover, too. Wonder how I'll like the book... Thank you for visiting. I'm off to visit your blog.

Kailana - Wasn't that just the best book?! Might be time for a reread. I should recommend it to my book group.

Mom - If you don't, let me know and I can send this out to you. I still have her earlier books to read first!

Joy - I see you've already finished Cody's book. I'm completely engrossed and anxious to get back to it. As in right now! So far, I'm loving it, although it's just as disturbing as I expected. I'll email you when I'm finished.

I think my mom got Little Monsters through The Book Depository. I'll let you know what I think. Kind of nice to read something not everyone else is reading!

Nan - I plan to read them in order. I'm anal about that sort of thing. Thanks for the advice. I'm sorry you didn't like the others. Wonder if I will...

Iliana - Thanks! I hope to get to all of these this year. No, really! ;)

Bellezza - Of course it is! :) I did like The Pilot's Wife a lot, too. It was the first book by Shreve that I read. I still have quite a few in my stacks. Have you read Eden Close? That's one. And Body Surfing, I think.

Booklogged - Thanks for letting me know. I probably would've read them in order anyway, but it's good to know it's important to the storyline.

Speaking of reading books in order, see my note above to Katya.
