Dewey's Read-a-Thon 2012 Wrap-Up

I thoroughly enjoyed this year's Read-a-Thon! Unlike previous years, I decided to take a break every hour and catch up on emails and blog-hopping, in addition to hanging out with my husband and working on some weekend chores. It was a nice balance and my eyes didn't get too tired.

Here are my final stats:

Start Time: 7:55 a.m.

End Time: 11:25 p.m.

Total Reading Time: 7 hours

Total Time in Breaks: 8 1/2 hours

Total Pages Read: 545*

Total Number of Books Finished: 1

Books Read:

The Devoted by Jonathan Hull (Fiction)

A Thousand Mornings by Mary Oliver (Poetry)

The Hunchback of Neiman Marcus by Sonya Sones (Fiction)

*253 of the 545 were from Sones' book, which is told in verse. It's a very quick read.

This was a great challenge and I'm looking forward to the next one in the spring. Until then, I'm going to aim for at least 2-3 hours of reading every weekend. 15-20 minutes before bed just isn't enough!

    1. So far, I'm loving it! The parts about being 50 are really resonating with me. Much more so than Nora Ephron's book (I Feel Bad About My Neck). I've been laughing out loud quite a bit, but last night as I read, I found myself feeling sad and had a lump in my throat. Overall, it's a wonderful book. I'm so glad Nancy/Bookfool recommended it, as I never would have picked it up otherwise.

    2. Well, Nora really was writing more from 'my' age group perspective. ;<)
50 feels so long ago, I can barely remember it except for the fact I had two teenagers, and one began driving. YIKES. no wonder my hair is all white.
So pleased you read the Mary Oliver poems. It feels like she's in the room talking to you, doesn't it. Just you and her together. Oh, she's wonderful.

    3. Don't get me wrong, Nan. I did enjoy Ephron's book, but this one spoke to me a bit better.

Yes, Oliver's poems are so down-to-earth. I practically have sticky-notes on each and every page! ;) Thank you for introducing me to her works.

  2. I'm curious about your thoughts on the Neiman Marcus book, too! I have it on my TBR shelf, but haven't made the time yet. When it first came out, I began listening to the Neck book, but wasn't interested. Glad to read that they are different.

    1. I really enjoyed The Hunchback of Neiman Marcus. It was much better than I anticipated! I'm way behind on my reviews, so I'll just say now that this one will get somewhere around a 4/5 to 4.5/5. Give it a try, Joy. A don't be put off by the "verse" style. I actually love it!

  3. The Hunchback of Neiman Marcus was such a surprise for me - an unexpectedly great read, and perfect for readathon! Twenty minutes of reading before bed just isn't enough for me either. Good luck carving out that extra reading time each weekend.

    1. Wasn't it wonderful, JoAnn?! I have a feeling it's one I'll pick up again in another year or two. It's such a quick and easy read, filled with humor and tenderness. It really spoke to me as a woman, wife and mother. LOVED it!

    2. Hello one and all,

Sonya Sones here, author of THE HUNCHBACK OF NEIMAN MARCUS. I'm delighted to hear that you all have been enoying it. On the hopeful news front, Michelle Pfieffer has optioned it and would love to star in it. That would be life-changing...Anyhow, I hope you'll recommend it to all your friends, and, as you know, Christmas is coming...

      xx,
      Sonya

    3. Thanks for your comment, Sonya! I'm terribly slow with reviews this fall, but hope to get one written for your wonderful book later this week. I'll bet your excited about the possibility of Michelle Pfieffer starring in the film... I think she'd be perfect! And as far as recommending it to all my friends, you don't have to worry. I have the book on my personal "employee recommends" endcap (I work at B&N) and will keep it there throughout the holidays. :)

  4. What a day well spent. I've never done marathon reading like that. Your time was productive indeed. Don't think I can finish a book in 7 hours, being a slow reader myself.

    1. It was a productive day! I had hope to have a repeat this weekend, but I spent too much time on the computer when I could have been reading. I'm trying to get caught up on my reviews. Only 3 more to go!
