Mailbox Monday

I've been trying to ignore all the new ARCs at work (and I haven't requested any from Shelf Awareness for months), so my stack for the past month or so is pretty meager. But I'm not complaining. I have more than enough to read! As a matter of fact, looking back on my last Mailbox Monday post (dated February 2013), I am embarrassed to admit that I have not read one single book from that large stack! And looking back even further (Mailbox Monday dated July 2012), I realize that I've only read four of those books. You all know how that goes, though, right?

So, I'm hoping to get to these three gems before my next Mailbox Monday post. I'm a big fan of Joyce Maynard and quickly snatched up the ARC of After Her when it arrived at work earlier this summer. I thoroughly enjoyed Labor Day, which I read almost four years ago, but my all-time favorite is The Usual Rules. That coming-of-age novel hit my Top Ten List for 2005 and it's one that I hope to find time to eventually re-read.

My dear friend and fellow blogger, Bellezza, sent me a copy of Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. As you might recall, I fell in love with Rowell's Eleanor and Park earlier this summer and will make certain to read Attachments before the end of the year. As a matter of fact, I may just have to jump right into it as soon as I finish my current book.

Bellezza, ever so generous, also sent me a copy of Beth Hoffman's Looking for Me. I wasn't as enamored with Saving CeeCee Honeycutt as other readers, but Bellezza has convinced me to give Hoffman's latest novel a chance. I think she knows me well and I trust her judgement, so I'm happy to give this book (with its lovely cover art) a read.

Many thanks to Bellezza for the lovely books and big thank you to Kathy of BermudaOnion's for hosting this week's Mailbox Monday.

What's in your mailbox this week?

  1. You will LOVE Looking For Me.

I feel the same way about requesting books. I have been cutting back unless it is something I really, really can't live without. :) I also have PLENTY of FANTASTIC books to read way into the new year. :)

    Have a great week.

    1. I probably have enough books to read for the next decade! ;) Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Oh dear, the compulsion one tends to feel when receiving new books can be quite overwhelming. You, my friend, have taught me the importance of drawing boundaries...well, let's say I'm in the process of learning that necessary skill. I sit here tonight, with an awful stomachache from teaching in a room with an excess of 90 degrees all day, and I try to work on a NetGalley book I requested. It isn't going very well. So if you get to the books I sent this week, next month, or a year from now, know they were sent for your pleasure not obligation. Xo

    1. I've learned to ignore publisher/author solicitations for new books simply because I know I will never read the book in time for the review. I'm excited about the two books you so kindly mailed to me and I know I'll read them sometime in the coming months. I just finished my current book (Sea Creatures) and have one "end of the summer" book on my stack for the weekend. That is, if I ever get caught up on some housework, emails and reviews.

I hope it starts to cool down in the next few days (Ha!). I'm so sorry you have to teach in such miserable conditions!

  3. Despite having it out from the library numerous times, I have yet to finish Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. I think I have a bias against precocious young characters others seem to enjoy in their reading. However, I am curious about Looking for Me because both the cover and description are appealing. I'll be eager to see your comments, Les, when you've read it--and, yes, I am content to wait until you catch up! :)

    1. I will keep you posted, Marcia. I may not get Looking for Me reviewed as soon as I finish, but I'll share comments on Goodreads. Glad to know I'm not the only one who didn't fall in love with Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. :)

  5. I've grown to believe smaller piles are better, as well. This week, I've received 5 books (including swap books but not including the two cookbooks I ordered) and I feel overwhelmed just looking at them. I only read about 2-4 books per week! So, one per week would be more than adequate for a "new book" fix, right? I'm doing much better at limiting what I receive but could stand a bit more work.

Incidentally, from the past stacks, "Z" is very good. I haven't read any of your current stack. Enjoy!

    1. I actually took to boxes of ARCs down to our basement early this year (or maybe it was last summer!) when they started to get too overwhelming. Every now and then, I'll peruse the titles and bring one upstairs. Honestly, I could read all my unread books for at least a decade without ever adding to the stacks.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll dig "Z" out and bring it upstairs!

  6. I STILL haven't opened The Usual Rules and I want to read After Her because I did really enjoy Labor Day. And, of course, I want to read Attachments since I really enjoyed my introduction to Rainbow with Eleanor & Park.

I was dusting my library this morning and was getting a bit anxious because I want to get to SO many books and there just isn't enough time in a day.

    1. I know that anxious feeling all too well! I'm hoping to get some reading in this coming week while we're on a trip to New Mexico, but we'll see. I generally don't read a lot while traveling.
