Ajo and Yuma, AZ

Thursday and Friday, October 11 & 12, 2018
Ajo to Yuma, Arizona
Blue Sky RV Resort
Distance: 146 miles
Duration: 1 night
Cost: $36
Weather: Cloudy and warm

We decided to skip a day trip to the Organ Pipe National Monument since I didn't feel like driving anywhere and Rod had to work on an editing project. So, I took advantage of our time at the Shadow Ridge RV Park and did a few loads of laundry, worked on editing some photos from our trip to the Grand Canyon, caught up on social media and did a little reading. Later that evening, while sitting on the couch, I though I heard rain, but not on the roof. Huh? I couldn't figure it out, so I poked my head outside of the RV. There were at least a dozen javelinas walking straight toward me. Freaked me out! I'm not sure what they would do, but I wasn't going to find out. Glad we hadn't planned to grill outside.

Not the prettiest RV park, but at least it was quiet.

Beautiful sunset!

The next morning we continued to make our way west toward San Diego. After gassing up in Gila Bend, we hopped on I-8 and headed to Yuma. It was an uneventful, albeit boring drive with a little wind, but nothing terrible. We arrived at the Blue Sky RV Resort, which is not much of a resort compared to some others we've visited.

Blue Sky has level sites (gravel), with full hookups, a pool, club house, laundry, showers, etc. Looks like there are a lot of full-time residents and eventually snowbirds. No picnic table or fire ring, but it was too warm to spend much time outside. Thank goodness for our air conditioning!

Not the most beautiful site, but for one night it was fine.

The park is fairly close to the Marine Corp. Air Station, so there was a bit of noise as the helicopters flew directly over us. Thankfully, they stopped before midnight!

Another gorgeous sunset!

  1. I bet seeing all those javelinas was scary!! We used to live near an Army base that flew helicopters and, after a while, didn't pay any attention to them.

    1. Kathy, I think javelinas are fairly common in the desert, but I sure didn't want to get any closer to the pack that was wandering around our RV! We used to live near Mira Mar Naval Airstation in San Diego and we got used to the fighter jets flying over our home. Everything sounds louder in an RV, though, and these helicopters sounded super low!

    1. Thanks, Diane. If I knew how to use a photo editor, I'd get rid of the power lines! :)

  3. I love your photographs, and the vicarious trips you are me to in Arizona. What a state! It’s one of my most favorites.

    2. How I loved San Diego when we went to Daniel’s Marine Corps graduation! And I well remember San Francisco when my mother took me there as a little girl. Soak up some extra sunshine and freedom while you’re there! Xo

    3. Meredith, to be clear, this was the trip we took last fall. We are currently in Oregon, enjoying unseasonably warm (70?) weather, watching the whales play offshore. We head down to San Diego in September for my daughter's wedding, though. We'll be gone 6-7 weeks but will spend the majority of time in California.

    1. Meredith, I can't wait to here what you think of Where the Crawdads Sing. It was a wonderful audio book.

    2. I started it last night...and, oh dear. The likening to Barbara Kingsolver, and the sense I have of a rape/attack of some sort, isn’t sitting so well. (Plus, poor Moby Dick is waiting. I read the first chapter of that and highlighted five places.😳) Maybe I should try it in audio; that was the only way I could get through Emma Donaghue’s Room.

    3. Meredith, I enjoyed the audio of Where the Crawdads Sing, so maybe go that route.

  5. Sometimes we just need those "at home" days in our travels to catch up on laundry and other tasks. But if you've never been to Organ Pipe National Monument, put it on your list for a return visit. It's a gorgeous park, and the campground is lovely (no hookups).
The wonderful light and clouds and sunsets make all of your RV parks look great!

    1. Laurel, we enjoyed our "at home" day, especially since the laundry facility was so nice. Definitely beats going to a laundromat! I'll make a mental note to get to Organ Pipe NP next time we head to AZ to visit our friends in Green Valley. We don't mind dry camping and I've heard that campground is wonderful. Take care and safe travels!
