Favorite Tomes

Several bloggers have been sharing their favorite tomes for TTT (Top Ten Thursday), a weekly meme hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl. I used to participate in memes back in the early days of blogging, but it's been ages since I've shared any of my favorites. I love a huge book, so I couldn't resist this week's theme ("Books with a High Page Count").

Have you read any of these? So far this year, I've read seven books with over 400 pages, and expect there will be more before the arrival of the holidays.

  1. You may be awarded the Top Reader of Big Books. You have so many good ones on your favorites list---Fine Balance, Anna Karenina, Book Thief. And I keep seeing that King book, 11/22/63...

    1. Deb, my collection of Big Books dates back to the 1980s, so it's no wonder I have so many. Oh, yes. That King book is definitely worthwhile. I know you don't like scary books, but this one isn't your typical King horror story.

  2. I don't meme much myself anymore, but sometimes I cannot resist a Top Ten Tuesday. Loved The Shell Seekers--I reread it a year or so ago, and I love just about everything by Rosamunde Pilcher.
East of Eden is another favorite, as is All the Light We Cannot See, having read both at least twice.
And Ken Follett, one of my favorite chunckster authors, along with Edward Rutherford. I've only read Sarum once, but it is due for a reread. My favorite of his is London.

    I don't read horror, but I absolutely loved 11/22/63.
I never did read The Thornbirds. I liked Colleen McCullough's Rome books, but she's hit or miss with me.

    1. Jane, I may start doing these TTT memes. I love a reason to make a collage or list! I read The Shell Seekers in 1988 and again in 2022. What a marvelous book. I love Rosamunde Pilcher's novels (not so much her short stories). My review is here.

Ken Follett's stories are so good on audio. I'd love to give them a second listen. I've only read Sarum, but will think about giving London a try. My husband has read Russka and Ireland, I think. Yes, 11/22/63 was fantastic, wasn't it?

I read The Thorn Birds in 1981 and again in 2012. Sadly, it didn't stand the test of time. You can read my thoughts about the book here.

Thanks so much for commenting. That's what makes these post fun!

  3. Nice job! I've read 4 off your 2024 list and just a couple off your favorite list. Most of these are great sagas. Demon Copperhead was a big read for me ... it was quite worth it.

    1. Susan, I agree that Demon Copperhead is well worth the investment in time. I'm looking forward to reading The Lacuna, which is also quite long.

  4. If I remember correctly my book group reacted fairly negatively to Flight Behavior thinking the book was too preachy. Let me see if I reviewed it... Nope I didn't say anything about book club in my review. So either we read it after I'd read and reviewed it or it wasn't selected and the preachiness was the excuse. I do love Barbara Kingsolver and her books so much. Here's that review, also from over ten years ago: https://headfullofbooks.blogspot.com/2013/07/review-flight-behavior-by-barbara.html

    1. Anne, I read your review from 2013. Like your book group, most of the women in my group didn't care for the book nearly as much as I did. I didn't find it preachy, although I did think Kingsolver did get a little didactic toward the end of The Poisonwood Bible.

  5. You and I share a lot of favorites. Also, I've read 6 of your 400+ reads. I am still trying to get through Infinite Jest. I am fascinated by it so I keep going but it's 1200 pp.

    1. Ti, that's a long book! I will be curious to read your review, but it's doubtful that I'll read the book.

  6. Such a great TTT topic! I love getting lost in a big book. We share many favorite tomes and I enjoyed just seeing all those covers together in one spot. So far this year I've read 6 books over 400 pages (The Annotated Mansfield Park at 885 pages is the longest) and will probably read at least a couple more before the year ends.

    1. JoAnn, I'm going to attempt to participate in more of these TTT posts. It's fun to put together a collection of books, especially for future reference for recommendations for friends. Yikes! 885 pages is really long!
