Home Again, Home Again...

I'm back from my vacation and while I had a great time (in spite of the heat & humidity!), I didn't get much reading accomplished (not that I really thought I'd have the time). I finished P.J. Tracy's Snow Blind and started in on Capote's In Cold Blood (which I should finish tonight if I'd stop reading other book-lovers' blogs!). Not sure what I'll pick up next. Maybe something light and fluffy since I plan to start September with a stack of classics (my own "Back To School Reading Challenge").

  1. You went to Va Beach right? I'm just a few hours away from there and if the heat and humidity was anything like it is here (I'm near Greensboro, NC) I know it was awful. I keep hoping we will have a thunderstorm to cool things off! I am glad you had a wonderful time.

Can't wait to hear how you like In Cold Blood. I bought it on a whim a couple weeks ago.

  2. Yep, we were in VB. We're used to the high temps here in Lincoln, and even the humidity, but it was awful in Virginia. Of course we were outside quite a bit one day, celebrating our granddaughter's 4th birthday. I was ready to jump in the kiddie pool.

So far, so good with In Cold Blood. I'm surprised that it's so readable. Not at all what I expected. I'm anxious to read Capote sometime soon, but I think I'll take a breather first and go for something light and cheerful.

It's agonizingly humid and hot here in Charlotte. Even the thunderstorms don't make much difference!

Glad you had a good time, glad you're back! I added 'The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop' to my wishlist after seeing the book's cover on your previous post.

  4. In Cold Blood is one of those books that I've actually stayed up all night to read.

Truman Capote could have been one of the greatest writers of 20th century America. Unfortunately, he wasted his talent and drugs and alcohol finished him off.

We're lucky to have In Cold Blood and the few other things he was able to finish.

  5. Lesley,

Isn't it a lovely cover? I actually started reading it (The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop) while sitting in the DFW terminal, but it started off so nicely I decided to wait and read it when I could sit some place a bit more quiet and comfortable and savor each and every word. Am I weird, or what? ;)

  6. Mary,

It certainly has held my attention, particularly during a few long flights the past week. I had a bit of trouble getting started, but it didn't take long to grab my attention. Capote is a wonderful writer, although I was disappointed with Breakfast at Tiffany's. A Christmas Memory is more to my liking. Beautifully turned phrases.

I'm enjoying your blog. Hope you don't mind that I've added it to my blogroll.

Truman Capote is one of those authors I want to read but have yet to find the time. I've read A Christmas Memory, though, and really enjoyed it.

  8. Ex Libris,

I don't know if you read true-crime, but I was pleasantly surprised that In Cold Blood wasn't as horrific to read as I anticipated. No gratuitous violence. Simply stated facts not unlike what we read in today's papers. Probably much more upsetting to read when it was first published. Or maybe I'm just desensitized to the nature of the crimes.
