I have to laugh at the violence you express when you don't like a book. lol It is never "put" it aside, it normally involves throwing. Just funny. Anyways, I have never had a desire to read this book, and now I really won't!
Oh thank you for saying this! It seems everyone I know always raves about this book but I just couldn't stand it. Have you read Case Histories? Now that one I liked quite a bit.
Stephanie - Me, too. Nothing like an interesting cover to grab my eye! Unfortunately, that's not always a good thing.
Kailana - Glad to provide a little humor to you day. ;)
Iliana - Oh, good! It's always nice to hear my negative reviews re-affirmed by a well-read blog buddy. I haven't read Case Histories, but have heard good things about it. I'll try not to let this negative reaction spoil any future reads of Atkinson's books.
Lesley - Well, you never know. You may wind up loving it! I just wasn't in the mood for quirky, annoying characters. Could've been a timing thing. I look forward to your review.
Literary Feline - As I said to Lesley, you may wind up loving it. Wouldn't that be nice, especially if your expectations aren't set too high.
I read this book about 5 years ago after a friend of mine told me it was her favourite book of all time. I have to admit I struggled with it -- I didn't much enjoy it and have never been inclined to read anything else by Atkinson since.
I picked this one up after hearing great stuff about her book Case Histories and hearing good reviews of this one. I wasn't impressed and had to make myself finish it.
Still haven't picked up anything else by Atkinson since.
Kimbofo - Thanks for the reassurance that I'm not missing something spectacular! BTW, I stopped by your other blogs. I've only been to London once, but I'll enjoy the visiting via your blog. Lovely photos!
SuziQ - Ah, I guess I wasn't the only one who didn't care for it. I still want to read Case Histories, however. Perhaps she's improved over the years?
I was intrigued by the cover of this book. I am glad that I didn't pick it up!

ReplyDeleteI've got this one on my TBR shelf, and I will still read it, but my expectations will be tempered now - probably a good thing!
ReplyDeleteThat's no good! Like Lesley from A Life In Books, I have this one on my TBR shelf to read. And like Lesley, I'll give it a go and not expect too much.
