Southern Reading Challenge 2007

I know it's ridiculous to even consider 13 books for one challenge, but I chose these from my stacks with hopes of at least reading half between now and August 30th. How hard can it be? Two a month. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. :) Thanks Maggie, for hosting this wonderful challenge!

Up Island by Anne Rivers Siddons (Georgia)

Welcome to the World, Baby Girl! by Fannie Flagg (Alabama)

The Great Santini by Pat Conroy (South Carolina)

The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy (New Mexico)

gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson (Georgia)

Saving Grace by Lee Smith (North Carolina)

Slow Way Home by Michael Morris (Alabama)

On the Occasion of My Last Afternoon by Kaye Gibbons (North Carolina)

Farewell, I'm Bound to Leave You by Fred Chappell (North Carolina)

The Ladies Auxiliary by Tova Mirvis (Massachusetts - born in Tennessee)

The Sunday Wife by Cassandra King (South Carolina)

To Dance With the White Dog by Terry Kay (Georgia)

The Promise of Rest by Reynolds Price (North Carolina)

You are insane woman! :) You've got lots of great choices here. Gods in Alabama is one of my choices too. I've heard such good things about it. Good luck!

Up Island is the only one I've read. I really like Anne Rivers Siddons. I love listening to her books on CD.

  3. I've only read Up Islands, but I loved it, as I do almost all of Anne Rivers Siddons. I look forward to discussing it with you, even though I'm not doing the Southern Challenge. Plus, I vote for you; you can read 13 books no prob.

  4. You must of sat at the front of the class in elementary school! ;D

Lucky 13, you are sure to come away from this summer feeling the effect of our very Southern existance! Have fun and thanks for participating.

  6. You go, girl! I'd love to join Maggie's challenge, but I can't bear to read Southern fiction when it's hot - you know, unless it just happens to reach out and grab me. Maybe something will grab me during the summer.

  8. I'm currently reading Peachtree Road by Anne Rivers Siddons for this one. I've never read The Great Santini, but I adored Conroy's Beach Music enough that I want to re-read it. I loved both of Joshilyn Jackson's books and am looking forward to her newest.

I'm definitely looking forward to your reviews :-)

  9. Iliana - I know, I know! I hope Gods in Alabama isn't a let down. So much hype...

Kay - I really like Anne Rivers Siddons, too. My favorite so far is Colony.

Bellezza - Oh, I don't know if I can read all 13, plus the remaining books for my other challenges, but it'll be fun trying. :)

Maggie - Well, er, maybe. ;) I did like school. Thanks for hosting the challenge. I'm excited about it!

Lisa - Yep, I'm a bit crazy about these challenges. Plus, I love making lists. Helps keep me motivated to read some of my own books.

Nancy - You know, I never thought about reading books set in hot climates during the summer. I don't think it bothers me, but then, I'm not living in the deep south like you. We get our share of 100-degree days, and it does get quite humid, but probably not like where you live. So what do you like to read during the summer?

Robin - I see you've chosen To Kill A Mockingbird (audio). I'll be anxious to hear what you think of Sissy Spacek's narration. I love that book!

SuziQ - I've been a bit hesitant to read anything else by Pat Conroy. I loved Beach Music (I would have to say it's in my all-time Top Ten) and am afraid nothing else will be as good. We shall see!

Thanks for the positive remarks about Joshilyn Jackson's books. I've heard nothing but good things about both.

  10. I loved the movie (Hallmark?) of To Dance With The White Dog. Very well done with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.

  11. Uh-oh, I can tell I'm going to being adding several more books to my list. I haven't read any of these, but they all sound good.

Haven't heard you mention lately if you are still planning a trip to the San Juan Islands this summer. Is that still a go?

  12. Nan - I'll have to add the movie to our Netflix. Thanks for the recommendation.

Booklogged - Yep, were still planning our trip for July. Counting the days, as a matter of fact!

Pat Conroy is a good choice for my home state of South Carolina.

  16. Although I've read several by Flagg and McCarthy, I haven't read these.

I've read Gods in Alabama, To Dance with the White Dog, and The Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed all of them, but my favorite is The Ladies Auxiliary!

Great list, Les, I need to check several of these out.

Wow, I'm impressed! And will be even more so if you manage to finish them all, haha. Good luck!

  18. MyUtopia - I've tried one or two by Lee Smith and wasn't too thrilled, but I thought since I have this one in my stacks, I should give it a try. I have to admit, it's already at the very bottom of the pile! ;)

Paul - I loved Conroy's Beach Music, so I suspect this will be an enjoyable read, as well.

Andi - Guess what? I did! I'm almost finished. Review should be up later this week.

Jenclair - Thanks for the confirmation on three of these. I think I'll read To Dance with the White Dog next. My husband enjoyed it a few years ago.
