Oh, The Weather Outside Was Frightful...

Not exactly the footwear I was planning to wear today!
And, yes, they're ugly, but they keep my feet warm and dry.

Ski jump anyone?

This doesn't show how high the drifts really are.
I had just returned from walking Annie-Dog and was too worn out to walk all over the neighborhood with my camera.
And, of course, she doesn't like it when I bring it along.
I tell you, that dog is really weird about cameras.
And gas ovens.
And coffee bean grinders.

My poor little car.
She's not going anywhere for awhile.

  1. I guess "the weather outside was FRIGHTFUL"...LOL We just has brief rain here, but there still is some snow on the ground as well. Good time to stay indoors and read!

Your little red car and my little red car are in similar situations! However, you took your dog for a walk today which is what I meant to do, but I got all preoccupied with making white chicken chili for the cousin gathering tonight. That, and finishing Mrs. Dalloway. Which I suspect went over my head cause really, I don't get all the fuss over that novel. Anyway, happy reading as you won't be going anywhere!

  5. Ditto that weather here! We had a 4 foot drift in front of our garage yesterday when we woke up and it was by no means the deepest drift in our yard! I need to get some boots like that--ugly or not, I don't care, I just want to be warm.

  6. I'd forgotten the snow drifts in Nebraska. Looks like curling-up-with-a-book-and-hot-chocolate weather to me.

  7. We haven't really had a lot of snow yet this year. It has mostly been rain...

  8. Diane - It was! I thought things were improving early this morning when I saw the sun shining, but it was short-lived. Now it's dark and gloomy again. At least it's not snowing anymore. Definitely a good time to stay inside and read (or catch up on book reviews, as is the case for me!).

Andi - Yeah. Well. You can have it! Actually, you did this year! :)

Bellezza - How much snow did you get?

We walk Annie-Dog every day. Always twice, but sometimes three times. It's good exercise for us humans and she likes to socialize with the neighborhood dogs. She'll "go" in the backyard, if she absolutely must, but she prefers to do her business at the park.

Mmmm, white chicken chili sounds wonderful right now. I'm getting ready to go make Pioneer Woman's Chicken Spaghetti.

I liked Mrs. Dalloway ok, but read it after The Hours, so it was a little easier to comprehend. You should rent the movie now. Both, I mean. Mrs. Dalloway with Vanessa Redgrave (I think) and The Hours with Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore. Excellent movies!

Pam - I have to admit, it is. Just wish there wasn't quite so much.

Lisa - Our snow-removal guy just came back to clear the driveway entrance now that the plows have been through. He also tackled the huge drift in front of our garage. We didn't need to get into it since we park our cars in our driveway (the garage is detached), but my husband wants to get out to the garage and start his motorcycle up. It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow, so maybe we'll get a little melting in.

Those boots are OLD! If my memory serves me correctly, we bought them at the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, North Carolina back in 1992 or so. We had just moved to Lincoln from San Diego and saw these boots while staying at The Mast Farm Inn near Boone. They've gotten a lot of use over the years and I'm so glad we decided to buy them. As I recall, they weren't cheap!

Framed - And these drifts weren't nearly as bad as the ones out on some acreages. At least we have a bit of a windbreak from other homes and trees. I have a friend who lives south of Lincoln and she has a picture showing a drift that it taller than she is. She's 5'10". Amazing!

Kailana - We had an unusually mild, yet rainy summer. Everyone said that meant we'd have a snowy winter. And to think we can get storms like this up until the end of April. Sigh.

  9. It looks beautiful but I have to say I'm glad we don't get that kind of snow!

Austin was just cold and windy. Thank goodness.

    Stay warm and cozy :)

  10. Iliana - It really is pretty, especially when the sun comes out (which isn't too often, unfortunately). Glad you didn't get any bad weather!

  11. Les,

You look like we did last weekend - we got 20 inches!!

    Linda in VA

  12. Linda - We only got about 13, but the wind was blowing so hard, some of the drifts are HUGE! The sun came out for a bit today, but it's COLD. Supposed to drop down to negative 6 tonight. That's without the windchill.

Hope you had a good Christmas and that your birthday brings you lots of books!

I wrote you a long and eloquent reply from Panera, testing out my parents' wi-fi connection, and it got lost in cyberspace. So, here goes try #2:

First, we have about the same amount of snow as you do: a lot! I don't keep track of the number of inches, just how high over my boots the snow comes. It sure is beautiful, though. Even on little red cars.

Next, you know that I read The Hours before Mrs. Dalloway just as you did. However, I liked The Hours even less than Mrs. D. I think I'll follow your suggestion and rent the movies.

In so many ways, we must be related: little red cars, which books we read first, walks in the snow with our doggies...

  14. Bellezza - I'm sorry your first reply got lost in cyberspace. Thanks for #2!

Yes, the snow really is beautiful. We just got a fresh layer yesterday afternoon, so the backyard looks especially pretty again. (I don't know what the rest of the world looks like since I didn't leave the house all day!) I really don't mind the snow until it's time to head to work at 6:45 am! I've been driving the Xterra a lot these days. The Mini does well in the snow, as long as streets have been cleared. She has such a low center of gravity, it's easy to get high-centered on a drift if the roads are bad.

Really? You didn't like The Hours? I can't remember if I read it before or after watching the movie. Probably before since I rarely ever read a book once I've seen the film. But I did enjoy it. Definitely more than Mrs. D. The whole stream-of-consciousness (in Mrs. D.) was SO tiresome. But having read both now, I can see myself going back and re-reading the two books back-to-back. Maybe even for a book club discussion, along with the movies.

Of course we're related! Didn't we already decide that a couple of years ago? You're the sister I've always wanted. When we're little old ladies, we'll share a cabin in the woods with a beautiful canoe. Of course, we'll have to hire someone to paddle it for us!

    Happy New Year, dear friend!
