One Dog Night

Well, it could've been worse. I was expecting to wake-up to negative twenty or so. While negative five is cold, it's not too awful, especially since there's not much wind.

Having said that, I'm taking the day off! I just finished my breakfast, which I ate while perusing a beautiful cookbook (Barefoot Contessa at Home: Everyday Recipes You'll Make Over and Over Again). Except for the hum of the refrigerator, the house was perfectly quiet . I sat quietly, sipping my coffee, gazing out the French doors to our backyard, so beautiful with all the fresh white snow.

I could really get used to this.

  1. That is just not okay! Negative temps are so awful! My second winter here it was -12. Luckily, I think 8 is the lowest in our forecast this week.

    Stay warm!

  2. I love those kind of mornings. Enjoy your day off! (And thanks for Benny and Shrimp. Finished it last night and loved it!)

  3. Oooh, that does sound nice. I love a nice day off, with the house to myself and nothing to do but peruse!!!

How peaceful that sounds. We don't have anything like your cold, but it was cold enough for us, 24 according to my car as I was out for a couple of errands early. I'm home now with beef stew bubbling in the crock pot. I plan to make cornbread muffins and peach cobbler as well. After all, it's Friday night. We can have cobbler at least once a week! :-)

So....you could get used to that, huh? Hmmm........

  5. Ha! That is totally what I thought this morning! The outside temp was 0 and I was expecting 10-15 below! It was a nice surprise and I thought - 'zero's not so bad!'

    Crazy!

  6. Very chilly indeed!!! We got about 6-8 inches of snow last night, snow day today and I loved every minute of it!

  7. Yes, chilly.
And I feel sorry for that one dog out on such a night.

  8. There is nothing better than staying home in a nice warm house when it is absolutely frigid outside. It goes below zero just about every night here but usually the days are so bright and clear, that you can almost forgive the bone-jarring cold. Almost.

  9. Ha! I felt the same way! I was expecting to have to head off to work in -20 degree weather. When you live in Nebraska, you take your victories where you can get them.

  10. Oh my gosh, and here I've been whining because it's going to be down in the teens tonight. Stay warm!

  11. It's sad, you know. I am happy when it is the single digits negative.... Next week it is supposed to enter the double digit negatives, though. Not looking forward to that!

  12. The cold weather and snow are novelties for me, but now I'm beginning to long to see the grass again. It's still very cold here, although the snow is thawing just a tiny bit today, as the temperature rose just above freezing.

I love the fresh white snow too, but not the slush that follows.

  13. Ouch! And I thought our Texas weather in the teens was bad. I'm shivering just thinking about it.

  14. Allie - I agree. Negative temps are pretty bad if you have to go anywhere. I really don't mind if I'm lucky enough to stay inside all day.

Kim - It was a wonderful day. I enjoyed puttering around the house before hitting the gym later in the afternoon.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Benny and Shrimp!!

SuziQ - I survived! And wouldn't you know it, it's warming up! We hit a balmy 28 today. With the sun shining, it was almost comfortable to be outside walking Annie. The wind was the only downside. Looks like the rest of the week should be nice, too. Snow again next Sunday, though. But I'm not going to think about that right now.

MK - It was fantastic. And I had a great time at LifePointe. I'm so glad I joined!

Kay - It was lovely. The day off, that is. Not the cold weather. ;) My, oh my! 24 in your neck of the woods must feel downright frigid! Your dinner of stew with cornbread muffins and peach cobbler sounds divine. We had stew last week, too. Tonight we're having pot roast, mashed potatoes and green beans. The roast has been simmering in the crockpot all day and smells heavenly. No dessert, though. :(

Yeah, I could get used to staying at home... :)

Tara - We got lucky, didn't we? I really did not want to deal with windchills of negative 40! Ugh. So, how many days until the first of spring??

Staci - I think we're going to have a calm week, but there's snow in the forecast for next Sunday. Maybe the stuff on our driveway will melt before then, though. Lots of ice that needs to be chipped away.

Dad - But at least it was very nice and sunny (and a balmy 28) today. :) Oh, that doggy is so spoiled. She never sleeps outside and I believe she was curled up at my feet at least a couple of times this past week. Very spoiled.

Framed - I can usually forget about the bone-jarring cold except when I have to pump my gas. Or walk the dog. Or drive to work at 6:45 am, never feeling like the car heater has kicked in until I pull into the parking lot. Summertime is my absolute favorite word! :)

Lisa - I hear ya! It's pretty sad when 28 degrees is something to get excited about.

Bermudaonion - It's warmed up a bit. Looks like tonight's low should be around 20. But, ack!! I just checked the forecast and they're saying we might have snow flurries tomorrow morning. Sigh.

Kailana - Double digit negatives. For the low or high?? Either way, it sucks.

Margaret - The novelty wears off pretty quickly around here. I have to admit, though, it sure is pretty when it's snowing those big fat flakes. It's certainly much nicer than the snow that comes down like rain. Or sleet, for that matter. We didn't get above freezing today, but it was sunny and actually quite nice to be outside. I took our dog for a longish walk and she seemed very happy. I was fine until the wind picked up and I realized I'd forgotten a scarf for my face.

Andi - Y'all are really getting the cold blast, too, though. Stay warm and watch out for those icy over-passes!

  15. Mercy! Negative five! I cannot really comprehend that. I've been shaking in my shoes with three nights of below freezing temps. How do you function?

  16. Debbie - It's not so bad now. We hit 44 today! Whoohoo! Lotta melting going on (which could make things a little slick tomorrow, if we drop another ten degrees - current temp 41). How do we function? We pretty much stay at home and bundle up, although we set the thermostat to 68-70 and the house is nice and warm. The basement (where my husband has his little office/den), however, is FREEZING cold! He has a space heater, but I'd move my computer upstairs if it were me. TOO cold!! :)
