From Shelf Awareness (7/27/10):

Craig Is Blomkvist

The name is Blomkvist. Mikael Blomkvist. Rumors that Daniel Craig--best known as the latest James Bond--was in talks to star in the English-language version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Shelf Awareness, July 22, 2010) have proven to be true. Deadline.com reported that Craig has closed a deal to appear in the adaptation of Stieg Larsson's first novel that also "factors in options for two sequels based on The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest."

Casting for the Lisbeth Sander role is still underway, with candidates including Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska, Emily Browning, Sara Snook, Rooney Mara and Sophie Lowe. Sony has set a release date of December 21, 2011.

OK, I can see this. I was afraid it would be somebody really pretty like Brad Pitt. Daniel Craig actually looks kind of like the actor that plays Blomqvist in the Swedish version.

I do have trouble with Daniel Craig as James Bond. He's just not suave enough for me. I liked Timothy Dalton. Well, and Sean Connery of course.

I think Ellen Page as Lisbeth would be a major mistake. She's way too girl-next-door looking.

  2. Hey Lesley, have you seen the Swedish version of the movie? It is out on DVD, it has subtitles but it was really good, but very graphic at times! I think the actress that played Lisbeth was perfect in it!

  3. If there has to be a remake of the wonderful Swedish movie I'd be ok with Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. But, I just can't see another actress playing Lisbeth.

  4. I can so totally see this casting -- he has a Blomkvisty look about him. Plus, I really like him. :)

  5. Kay - I can picture DC as Blomqvist, too. Nice and rugged. Viggo Mortenson would be good, too.

Not sure about Ellen Page. They'd have to give her a punkish-looking hair cut or something to make her look tougher.

Sara - Got it from Netflix. Now to find time to watch it! :)

Iliana - I can't wait to watch the original Swedish version. Maybe tonight.

    Katya - I agree. And I do, too. ;)

  6. I am actually pretty happy with this casting. The key one for me though it Lisbeth. I can't imagine an actress doing a better job than the Swedish actress though!

  7. Thank goodness it's going to be Daniel Craig!! I heard a nasty little rumor that they were coming close to closing the deal with Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt! Ugh. Made my skin crawl when I would think of it!

I so hope they pick the right one for Lisbeth. I heard that the actress for the Swedish version was perfect.

I have it on my Netflix queue as well -- can't wait to watch it!

  8. Why oh why do they have to remake movies? Tom saw the original and said it was perfectly done. I just don't get it. Not that I plan to read the book or watch the film(s). :<)

  9. Marg - I finally watched the film and thought it was very well done. I'll be curious to see how the American version compares. I agree--I can't imagine any other actress than the Swedish gal.

Thanks for stopping by with your comment.

Coffee and a Book Chick - I do like Daniel Craig and would have been very disappointed if Brad Pitt had been selected. Ugh, is right! See my note above to Marg. The Swedish film was very good. A bit disturbing/graphic at times, but if you've read the book, you'll know what to expect.

Nan - Who knows! I agree with Tom. The original was perfect. And, yes, I don't think this is your cuppa. :)

  11. There is something so flipping hot about this man. He rather makes my knees weak, and I think he'd be perfect in that movie.

  12. Coffee and a Book Chick - It's great! As I listen to The Girl Who Played With Fire, I keep picturing the cast of characters and am completely absorbed in Lisbeth's story. I can't wait to see the second film!

Bellezza - I agree wholeheartedly. Just added Casino Royale (excellent!) and Quantum of Solace to my Netflix queue. Somehow I forgot to get the latter when it first came out on DVD.
