From Shelf Awareness (8/17/10):

Rooney Mara Will Be Lisbeth Salander

Rooney Mara has been chosen to play Lisbeth Salander in the English-language adaptation of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Sony Pictures Entertainment and director David Fincher selected Mara after "one of the most drawn out and closely watched casting searches for an actress in years," Deadline.com reported, noting that Mara, who recently worked with Fincher in The Social Network, had been considered to be the director's first choice.

Deadline.com called Mara "a strong match: she is the right age and looks like Salander." Fans of both Stieg Larsson and professional football may be interested to know that Mara great-granddaughter of New York Giants football team founder Wellington Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney.

Rooney Mara may look like Salander, but Noomi Rapace will always be Lisbeth Salander...at least in my mind.

  3. Not that I would know either of them; I need to get on with the second book of the trilogy. And here school's starting! Argh!

  4. I'm waiting for the Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo from Netflix now. Can't wait to see what I think.

  5. Staci - The Swedish film was a bit gritty, but I knew what to expect since I'd read the book. I'm anxious to see the second film once I can get it on Netflix.

Pam - He's doing much better! He took the week off and has been taking it easy. I think he was surprised that the surgery wiped him out for as long as it did. We're very glad it wasn't worse than it was. 3 days in the hospital was long enough.

    Thanks for asking.

Bellezza - I'm listening to the second one and LOVIN' it!!! I think that's going to be my plan here on out for the long books. Otherwise, I'd be reading one book for the entire month.

BTW, I rode my bike today for the first time in months! Felt great! Wish you lived nearby so we could ride tomorrow.

Jenclair - My husband and I really enjoyed it, but be forewarned; it's a bit gritty, as you can well imagine.

  6. She looks too sweet.

Again, I just don't know why they are remaking it so soon after the original hit the theatres. It may flop badly. I didn't go near the remake of Brideshead Revisited since it was perfect, perfect on television with Jeremy Irons. I have to say, that I love the Kenneth Branagh Wallander series - but then again, we in the States aren't able to get the original Swedish shows. Tattoo is a different situation.

  7. I haven't read the book yet but have read enough reviews to think the same thing as Nan. Since I'm not sure how her actual physical appearance matches up, I can only go with the impression I have of this character being a much tougher chick than this little girl.

  8. I LOVED the Swedish version, so I'm actually a little sad that they're making an English-language version.

  9. I don't mean to offend, but why does the US film industry always think they have to remake everything? So many great European or British films have been remade into inferior Hollywood versions. The Swedish films of the Steig Larsen trilogy are absolutely true to the books and do not dumb down or prettify any of the characters, and even as a non Swedish speaking viewer I found them really easy to watch, you hardly needed the sub-titles.

  10. Nan - I agree. She looks too pretty and sweet. But who knows what the make-up artists can achieve.

I agree. I honestly don't understand why Hollywood feels the need to make an American version of this film. The Swedish production is outstanding. However, I re-watched Casino Royale and am very interested to see Daniel Craig play the role of Mikael Blomkvist. :)

Lisa - I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I know I'll watch the U.S. production just out of curiosity.

Andi - Me, too, but I'll still watch it (on dvd).

Herschelian - No offense at all. I think a lot of us are surprised that Hollywood has decided to remake this fabulous film. And as you said, the subtitles weren't difficult to read one bit.
