Are You Listening?

I'm just about finished listening to The Passage (Justin Cronin), which has been playing on my Nano for over a month. Let it be said that it is The.Longest.Audio.Book.Ever. But more about that later. When I'm finally finished, I'll need to decide what to listen to next. I've downloaded so many books from my library and I'm not sure which to start with next. Any suggestions?

Still Life - Louise Penney (re-read)

Crocodile on the Sandbank - Elizabeth Peters

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry - Rachel Joyce

Birdman (John Caffery Series, Book #1) - Mo Hayder

OK For Now - Gary Schmidt

Peaches For Father Francis (Chocolate Trilogy Series, Book #3) - Joanne Harris

Shut Your Eyes Tight (Dave Gurney Series, Book #2) - John Verdon

A Land More Kind Than Home - Wiley Cash

The Buddha in the Attic - Julie Otsuka

The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters

The Long Goodbye - Meghan O'Rourke

The Orchardist - Amanda Coplin

Ooops! I just remembered I was going to read/listen to The Little Stranger for Carl's R.I.P. Challenge. However, I'd still love to hear your thoughts on these books. Which are your favorites and have you read them in print or listened to the audio?

I've listened to a couple of these. CROCODILE ON A SANDBANK is good. It would be different than what you've been listening to and not too long. I've listened to only one of Louise Penny's books so far - STILL LIFE - but the narrator is very good. I intend to listen to all of them eventually. You know that audio is another way I reread books. I love listening to a book that I've already enjoyed reading. :-)

    1. Thanks, Kay. I'm glad to hear that the reader for Still Life is good. I've read the book, but want to re-read via audio book before I start the second in the series. I've forgotten a lot about the characters!

    1. I'll make a note of that, Kathy. I have it on audio AND in print. It's a winner, eh?

  3. I loved The Little Stranger, which I was planning to reread in October (but time is getting away from me!). The other novel in your list I loved, and it's much shorter than The Passage, is The Buddha in The Attic. (Plus, it counts for the Japanese Literature Challenge. :)

    1. I just started listening to The Little Stranger yesterday afternoon. I FINALLY finished The Passage and remembered that I was going to listen to the Waters book for Carl's RIP. I know I won't finish before the end of the month, but at least I've made an effort. :)

I have a few books lined up for the JLC. The Buddha in the Attic is one. Norwegian Wood is another. I also want to read When We Were Orphans by Ishiguro and have it in one of my Read Before the End of 2012 stacks. ;)

  4. Bahahahaha!! Ok, I haven't listened to any of these so I'm no help. But, there's a Little Stranger readalong going on right now and everyone keeps raving about it. Seems it is the perfect time!

And I hate to rub it in that I have you beat on longest audiobook ever. Pretty sure I've listened to roughly 93 hours of King this year. Less if you subtract what I actually read, but still!

    1. Seriously? The Queen of Audio Books and you haven't listened to any of these? ;) No worries. I just started The Little Stranger after finally finishing The Passage. It's not quite as long as your recent audio (IT), but it seemed to take me forever! I have the ARC of The Twelve, but I need a break from the virals.

  5. I have A Little More Kind Than Home and will get to that one at some point. I can't wait to see what you pick next. I just bought The Passage a few weeks ago...can't wait to read it!!

    1. The Passage is very good, but it's quite long! I'm taking a break from Cronin and am going to spend the next few weeks listening to The Little Stranger. I'll probably listen to A Little More Kind Than Home after that. Or Crocodile on the Sandbank. Or Still Life. :)

    2. To clarify, not a break from The Passage, but from his books. I've got The Twelve in my stacks, but as much I enjoyed The Passage, I need to read something other than a book about Virals. :)

  6. If Crocodile is UNabridged, and is read by Barbara Rosenblat, then it is one of my very favorite readings of all time. You will fall in love with Barbara's version of Amelia Peabody. This was my introduction to the whole series, most of which I listened to on audio TAPES. :<)

    1. It's unabridged, Nan, but read by Susan O'Malley, not BR. :(

  7. I just finished reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry today and loved it! The audio version has very high ratings on audible, too. The only other one on your list I've read is The Buddha in the Attic, but it was just an okay book for me - sorry, Bellezza ;-)

    1. JoAnn, I've heard nothing but great things about The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I'm torn between reading the print copy and listening to the audio.

    1. Oh, I don't know. You have a lot of 4/5s for me to consider, so I'll keep this list in mind once I finish with The Little Stranger (which I started yesterday and am enjoying quite well!) Thanks for your input, Joy! I do appreciate it and know I can count on you for some great recommendations.

BTW, Diane (Bibliophile by the Sea) is sending me The Human Bobby. I can't wait!!!!

    2. Hooray for The Human Bobby! Or maybe I should say Hooray for Diane for sending it to you! Either way it's good. :) Make sure you have a chunk of time when you begin it. I didn't want to stop reading! I hope hope hope you love it.

    3. Yes! Hooray for Diane! :)

Thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll save it for my flight to TX next month, although that's a fairly short flight...
