    1. The guy on the bike looked rather nervous until the buffalo passed by. We chatted for a minute afterwards and he said it's a bit nerve-wracking! Better him than me. We were in our car with the windows down. As it approached, I decided to roll 'em up!

    1. Yep! That was the first of MANY buffalo viewed on this trip. I was happy to have power windows. And not riding on a motorcycle!

  3. Phew is right! I'd be scared to death if I was on that motorcycle!

    1. You and me both! I was nervous enough with my windows down to shoot pictures. This guy got awfully close to our car!

    1. Yep. My husband would love to ride his motorcycle through the Black Hills, but I think I'll stick to a car, thankyouverymuch! :)

  6. Wowie, zowie!! The phrase 'photo-op' was invented for this instance! :<) Would a buffalo go after someone? Are they aggressive?

    1. Nan, yes. According to all the literature gleaned from travel books and brochures, as well as the posted signs in Custer Park, these animals are not to be messed with.

"Expect "traffic jams" when bison herds decide to cross the road. Keep in mind that bison are wild, dangerous animals that are quite capable of turning on a dime and of reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. You cannot outrun them if they choose to charge, so keep your distance."

The second-to-last photo in the series shows the buffalo/bison in what looks like mid-step, but he was actually pawing the pavement. He did that a couple of times before moving toward our car. That's when I decided to roll up the window! The motorcyclist was relieved when the buffalo crossed the road and headed up the hill. :)

  7. My absolutely favorite part of our trip to South Dakota was seeing a herd of bison! Aren't they amazing? And stinky?!

    1. I don't think I noticed the stink, but we had our windows rolled up whenever they got too close. We loved seeing the bison and elk!
