I've enjoyed reading numerous Best Of 2020 posts and have added many of your favorite books to my 2021 TBR list. I already own a few (either in print or audio), but decided to create these collages so I don't forget any that have piqued my interest. If you could only recommend two, which would you choose? I need to make a couple of nominations to my book group later this week and I'm having a hard time narrowing down my selections.
I've read What You Wish For and The Lost Man and enjoyed both of them. That being said, we discussed The Lost Man with the mystery group. And What You Wish For is very good too. Has a librarian as a protagonist and some Galveston history. I had Hamnet recommended to me by a library friend and I'm really looking forward to reading The Four Winds. Didn't know that Lisa Genova had a new book coming out and it's non-fiction...interesting. I own The Midnight Library and would likely suggest that one, but I haven't read it yet. Hope you enjoy all of these. Oh, our afternoon book group discussed The Great Believers, but I wasn't able to attend and didn't read it. It seemed to be well-liked.
ReplyDeleteKay, I'm really eager to read What You Wish For and The Lost Man, but I don't own them, so I'll have to see about getting them from the library. Same with Hamnet, The Four Winds and The Great Believers. My mom has a copy of The Midnight Library, so I can borrow it from her and since I always love Lisa Genova's books, I'll go ahead and buy that one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these!
DeleteI just can't ever do this. That's why I stopped doing challenges. I guess I just like to finish a book, and then walk around and see what I'd like to read next. I did just buy The Splendid and the Vile! It comes tomorrow and I want to begin that day! Churchill and WW II.
ReplyDeleteNan, I do like walking around to see what I'd like to read after finishing a book, but it's also nice to have a selection that I've been meaning to read but easily forget about if I don't have them on a shelf. I'm eager to hear what you think of The Splendid and the Vile. Rod thought it was VERY good!!
DeleteI, too, want to read The Splendid and the Vile, and I have read Harper's The Lost Man, which was one of my Best Reads for 2019.
ReplyDeleteCathy, it seems like The Splendid and the Vile is one that a lot of us are eager to read. I'm glad to know that The Lost Man was one of your favorites. And now she has a new one out (The Survivors), so I better get crackin'!
DeleteYou and I are totally on the same page for TBR Fiction. I think I have 11 of what you listed on my shelf and some already read. I love the anticipation of a wonderful read.
ReplyDeleteTi, there are so many that caught my eye over the past year! I also have a shelf full of backlist titles that I'm planning to read in the next few months. Yes, I love that anticipation of a great read! So many books...
DeleteWow these collages are terrific. It's hard to choose 2 ... I want to read the Addie LaRue book though I hardly ever read fantasy books. I also need to read Hamnet. For a book club, I'd pick Migrations, Leave the World Behind, or The Vanishing Half. Those 3 books could have discussions behind them ... and all three seem easy to get into and are easily readable or via audio. fyi.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susan. I've been messing around with collages and think I've finally found a user-friendly site that I can use. As far as my nominations to my book group, I picked Addie LaRue and Migrations. Someone else has nominated The Vanishing Half and Hamnet, so I hope those two win, although I'll read them with or without the book group. Should be a great year of reading!
DeleteThe Splendid and the Vile was excellent and on my all-time favorite nonfiction lists! Some of your other suggestions are on my list, but there are quite a few new ones I need to check out!
ReplyDeleteAh, another vote for The Splendid and the Vile. I will definitely read it this year... probably later in the year for Nonfiction November.
DeleteI think I have your whole fiction TBR on my TBR stack too! haha... Well, I did read Anxious People and I wasn't that impressed but I definitely think I'm in the minority on that one. Your NF TBR also has some great choices but I hadn't heard of the Lisa Genova book until recently so that's kind of the one I'd probably choose.
ReplyDeleteToo funny, Iliana. I'm not surprised since we read a lot of the same blogs. Hmmm, too bad about Anxious People. I actually have that one on a shelf, so I'll get to it sometime in 2021. I'm planning to buy Genova's since I've read everything she's written. I wonder if this nonfiction work will be as readable as her novels.
DeleteMy aunt was just raving about Anxious People a couple of days ago and we tend to have similar taste in books. She said something about it feeling like a return to Backman's pre-Bear Town days. I haven't read anything post-Bear Town so that didn't mean anything to me.
ReplyDeleteThe only book I've read from your list is A Promised Land and I personally wouldn't choose a book that long for a book club. It would certainly give you plenty to discuss though!
My book club read Still Alice by Lisa Genova a long time ago and it generated good discussion. I imagine any of her books would.
I hope you enjoy these when you get to them!
Jen, I'm so glad to know that Anxious People is a winner. My mom read it a few weeks ago and it's now on my TBR shelf, so I hope to get to it in the next few months.
DeleteYeah, A Promised Land is most certainly too long for a book group selection, but I'm eager to give it a listen, maybe during the summer months when I'm taking longer walks.
I've read all of Lisa Genova's books and have enjoyed all but one (which I liked, but just not as much as the others). I'm curious about her new release since it's nonfiction.
