Favorite Shows

Someday in the distant future, when asked how we spent all those long months of isolation during the Great Pandemic, we'll probably respond as most everyone we know will: We watched A LOT of TV. Sure, we worked on puzzles, read, tried new recipes, exercised from home and stayed in touch via Zoom, but TV was our big distraction. Binge-watching TV shows isn't really a new thing, though, is it? The main difference now is that we're able to stream our favorite series (from a wide variety of services), whereas back in the olden days we had to wait for the DVDs to arrive in the mail.  Even more so now, we're always on the lookout for something new to watch, asking friends and family for recommendations, as well as subscribing to The New York Times Watching newsletter. We've viewed a lot of great shows (some of which I'd love to watch again) and I thought I'd share them with all of you. Please feel free to leave a comment with your favorites so I can add them to our watchlist.

The following are shows we've watched, but not this past year! I've included them for my own reference and would love to watch them again. Maybe someday.

  1. From what I can see here, we wouldn't be fighting over the remote very much. I just started watching "Lupin" on Netflix. Have you given that one a try? Oh! And (also on Netflix) I watched "The Dig" tonight, which I thought was very good, too.

    1. Cathy, we have Lupin on our list! And, we watched The Dig a couple of nights ago, too. We agreed it was very good. Excellent acting! Thanks for the recommendations.

  2. We've only watched a few of the series you have here (West Wing/House of Cards/Mad Men/Queen's Gambit) so there are plenty for me to check out. :-) Others we've enjoyed are Suits, Sneaky Pete, Goliath, Eureka, and Upload. We don't make quick progress since we only watch about an hour each evening, but we always look forward to it!

    1. Thanks for the recs, Laurel. I should have mentioned that the last three collages are of shows that we watched several years ago; not during the pandemic! We aren't binge-watching like we used to. Usually just one or two episodes a night (and not every night of the week).

  3. Wow! You've watched a bunch, though I guess not all of these in the last year. We keep adjusting what we are streaming. We do have Netflix and also Prime and Britbox right now. Plus some other things in order for hubby to keep up with sports that keep hopping streaming services. We've watched some of these and enjoyed them. Have you tried Murdoch Mysteries or Brokenwood Mysteries. Or Death in Paradise? We're caught up on all of those. I read the other day that there would be one more season of Bosch and then that would be all. Amazon is supposedly doing an adaptation of the Wheel of Time books (hubby read those way, way back, but says he doesn't remember much about them) and also something connected with Lord of the Rings (the 2nd age or something like that). Amazon's attempt to do a 'Game of Thrones' type show. We'll see how those are if they ever come out.

    1. Kay, as I mentioned in my reply to Laurel, you are right. We didn't watch all of this during the pandemic. The last three collages are of shows that we watched several years ago. Yep, we have Netflix, Prime, Hulu, HBO, Britbox, Acorn, etc. No, we haven't watched Murdoch Mysteries or Brokenwood, although my mom might have. Yes, we watched Death in Paradise. Forgot to put that one in! We always just and call it Penguins in Paradise. :) I liked the first two seasons, but they kept losing characters so I stopped. Rod watched all seasons, I believe. I saw that news about Bosch and Unforgotten will have another season, too. Yay!! Thanks for the recommendations.

  4. WOW, you do watch a lot of shows. I'm too antsy to sit too long. We do watch: This is Us, The Resident, The Good Doctor, Transplant (all done), Undoing (all done) and Your Honor. Have you watched Olive Kitteridge miniseries? It's so good!

    1. I just clarify that we have not watched ALL of these shows this past year! The last three collages are of shows we watched several years ago. I just wanted to have a visual of what we've already viewed. ;)

Yes, I've seen the Olive Kitteridge miniseries. Love Frances McDormand! I'll have to look into the ones you mentioned. Thanks, Diane!

  5. We share a lot of the same favorites! I can't remember if I mentioned it to you but we've started watching The Tunnel, which is the same concept as The Bridge but it's set between France and England. Really good! We're almost done with Season 2 and then we'll jump to Season 3 (and final, I believe). Of course, eagerly awaiting the last season of Bosch.

    1. Iliana, I can't remember if we tried The Tunnel or not, but I do remember that you mentioned it. Gosh, The Bridge was so good. I would love to watch it again. And, yes. Bosch is at the top of our list for the next season. Unforgotten has another season due out, too. Yippee!

  6. Some of my fave shows are listed here. Loved Breaking Bad and Broadchurch. I am still working my way through The Crown and have recently fallen into Schitt's Creek. What a wild show it is! I am loving it and wish I hadn't waited so long to watch.

    1. Ti, we loved Breaking Bad. Tried Better Ask Saul, but couldn't get into that one. Have you watched it? Broadchurch is outstanding (love David Tenent) and since you loved it, you should try The Bay (the one set in the UK). It's quite good! I've had Schitt's Creek on my list for a long time and hope to give it a try sometime soon.

  7. Vicki, I've never really gotten into those home-type shows, but I'll bet their a lot of fun, especially for those who are renovating their own homes. We re-watched House a couple of years ago and it was almost as good as the first viewing. I'm still (very slowly) watching This Is Us. My husband isn't interested, so I watch an episode every now and then.

  8. The Bridge I loved, it kick started my Scandi Noir obsession! They did a British/French remake called The Tunnel which is also very good. Battlestar Galactica I love too, I started rewatching it at the end of last year.

    1. Heather, I think we tried to watch The Tunnel and couldn't get in to it. I can't remember if it was a problem with the dubbing or what. I would like to rewatch The Bridge, though. And, oh, Battlestar Galactica is so good! I would definitely watch that again.
