RIP XVI Wrap-Up

I'm pretty happy with my results for this year's RIP challenge. The first collage is comprised of all that I read during the two months. Beneath that are the two original slides of what I had hoped to read. I also added a couple that weren't in my initial selections, both of which were winners so I'm glad I included them.

Final Results

My favorite book of the challenge is The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley. The Madness of Crowds, Falling, And Justice There is None and The One I Left Behind were all very good, too.

I gave up on The Innocent, A Reliable Wife and A Stranger in the House.

I'm still listening to If It Bleeds and The Outsider, but have put both on pause until I finish a book club selection.

All in all, it was fun to spend a couple of months focusing on mysteries and thrillers. They were all from my stacks, which is always nice, too. Now on to Nonfiction November!

  1. I always enjoy this challenge - you had a nice mix. I remember you raving about the Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley and, I was surprised to see I had it on my Kindle. It's so easy to lose track of what's on there! I originally picked 20 books and read 12. Most were just okay with a couple very good ones.

    1. Diane, it's a fun challenge, isn't it? I was happy to read over 50% of my choices and to have so many that I truly enjoyed is a bonus. I've got quite a stack for Nonfiction November and will be lucky if I read 4 of the 10 that I've selected. They tend to be on the lengthy side!

    1. Thanks, Jenclair. The only one I read that isn't mine is the Louise Penny mystery, which I borrowed from my mom. Of all the ones I finished, I'll probably only keep Hannah Tinti's on my "keeper shelves." It's one that I hope to read again in the not too distant future.

  3. Great job on the RIP Challenge! I thought Falling was very good as well (and I only thought about it a couple times on my last flight!)

    1. Thanks, Helen. Falling was really quite good and I've thought about recommending it to my daughter, but she travels (for business) A LOT! I think it would freak her out.

  4. Well done, Les! I think Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley was such a hit that it makes up for some of the duds. Thinking I may not bother continuing the Lady Hardcastle series...

    1. Thanks, JoAnn. I really had a fun time with this challenge. Yeah, I probably won't continue with the Lady Hardcastle series, either. The first was fun, but I'm not really into cozies.

  5. Great job! I think I own A Reliable Wife but it's in storage. I always see such mixed reviews of it. I don't know if I'll ever get around to reading it.

I love your new (since I was last here, anyway) header photo!

    1. Thanks, Jen. Yeah, I know what you mean about the mixed reviews for A Reliable Wife. A good friend loved it, but I just couldn't get interested.

The new header photo is from our most recent road trip to CA. We were on the Klamath River in Klamath, CA. It was so beautiful that morning!

  6. You finished quite a few of them ... and I think I'll get to the Tinti novel sometime due to your review. Time is flying right?!

    1. Susan, the Tinti book is really good! My husband just finished it and said he agrees.

  7. You did quite well. My RIP reading this year wasn't all that intentional. I got wrapped up in review copies.

    1. Ti, I don't get very many review copies anymore, so I'm trying to focus on the older books on my shelves. I'm beginning to see some gaps which is kind of a good feeling!

  8. Good job, Les! You got to some great sounding titles and also made the decision to stop reading some - which I fully support! I always feel badly when people tell me that they 'made' themselves read a book. Why? We don't do this for an assignment these days. I love the header photo too! Very fall-ish.

    1. Thanks, Kay! I'm all about quitting on books that aren't holding my attention. Life is too short!

Thanks for your kind words about my photo. I shot it when we were camping along the Klamath River in Klamath, California. It was a gorgeous morning!

  9. Look at you! Great job getting in all those R.I.P. reads. I want to read several of these! I'm still in the mood for some spooky reads but I'm taking a bit of a break for some other types of reads.

    1. I was quite pleased with my RIP results, Iliana. Still need to get back to the two Stephen King audiobooks, but not until I finish my book club read!
