Re-Reads of 2023

Do you re-read books? I try to fit one in each month, and it helps if my book group picks one that I've already read. Sometimes they're not as good as the first time, but sometimes they're even better.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
⭐⭐⭐💫 Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Various Haunts of Men by Susan Hill
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ These Precious Days by Ann Patchett
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Shadows in the Street by Susan Hill
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Evenings at Five by Gail Godwin
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Damnation Spring by Ash Davidson
⭐⭐⭐ Good Harbor by Anita Diamant

  1. First, that picture is absolutely stunning, wonderful, excellent. Did you use a special camera? Don't tell me it is "just" your phone!
I have thought about reading Evenings at Five again. I did so love it. I reread quite a lot - mostly old mysteries. I'm on the second Miss Marple by Agatha Christie. And, as always, am amazed, amazed that people think Christie is gentle and sweet. Her books can be pretty hard-boiled!

    1. Thank you, Nan. My header photo really was taken with my cell phone (Google Pixel 4). Amazing, isn't it?

I would like to read more of Christie. I'm enjoying Susan Hill's mysteries right now, but will eventually catch up.

  2. It's rare for me to re-read books and mainly will do so if it's in relation to a book club read. I was watching a book tube video and someone mentioned reading A Fine Balance and I was remember how that book affected me. Such a phenomenal read but hard so not sure I would re-read that one. I have thought about re-reading some middle grade favorites. I think that would be kind of fun. Especially like Judy Blume books or S.E. Hinton for example.

    1. Iliana, A Fine Balance is such a great story, but I enjoyed it better the first time I read it.

  3. I reread four books in 2023 (more than ever before) and would like to keep it around there again this year. My TBR list is just too long! ;-)

    1. JoAnn, every year I tell myself that I'm going to re-read a book each month, but of course, new books tend to take over my TBR stacks. This past year was especially good, but mainly because of my book group selections to read books I've already read. However, I'm still optimistic that I'll re-read a dozen this year. Wish me luck!

  4. I rarely reread ... but every blue moon I do ... I did read Donna Tartt's Secret History twice about ten years apart. I've also read Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird twice decades apart. Sometimes it's a good idea to revisit favorites. I still need to read Cutting for Stone! Hopefully this year.

    1. Susan, I hope to re-read a dozen books this year, but we'll see how it goes. Ah, you will really enjoy Cutting for Stone! I'm looking forward to reading his latest.

  5. I used to say I never reread, but in the last few years, I've reread a couple, and the result every time was an even better read.

    1. Deb, I wish my results were the same as yours, but a few of my re-reads have been disappointing. I'm still glad I'm making time to read some of my "keepers."

I often reread books, but only those that I really love, of course. It makes my experience richer...I always notice something new the second time around!

    1. Laurel, I keep waiting for the right time to reread a few of my favorites. Beach Music (Pat Conroy) is high on my list.
