Another Blog Break

No man needs a vacation so much
as the person who has just had one.
~Elbert Hubbard

So, we'll just take another!

Our destination:
Little House in the Woods
Little Whale Cove
Depoe Bay, Oregon

Mom and Bill's lovely home.

Yep, we're off again. Back to the Pacific Northwest, but a little bit to the south this time. I'd like to say I'll post daily pictures as I did for our other trip, but I'm tempted to turn the computer off and read two or three books this time! Ha! We'll see. So far I have the following stacked up to go in my bag:

Current book for Carl's R.I.P. II Challenge
So far, this is a great book!
Should keep me occupied for the long flights.

I'm reading this for Joy's Nonfiction Five Challenge.
It's good for sips & gulps between my other books.

I've had this in my stacks for YEARS!
I plan to read it for the 2007 TBR Challenge.

This was one of my selections for
Lesley's Armchair Traveler Reading Challenge.
I love the cover! Hope the content is just as pleasing.

Of course, I plan to visit my favorite Oregon bookstores, as well as some new ones (I hope). I'll post about those after we return. Until then, happy reading!

  1. Have a blast!!! Such a pretty part of the coast. If you head down to Newport - I recommend The Chowder Bowl at Nye beach for lunch and the Rogue Brew Pub - either the brewery at the south end of the bridge or the Brewers on the Bay pub on the north side of the bayfront.

If you're passing through Portland - I'm waving!

  3. Wow, have a wonderful time.

At my book group, a woman said she'd read Heart-Shaped Box and said that it was soooo good, it was stinkin' good!

  9. Have a great time Les. I can hardly wait to read about your trip. Have a great time at the bookstores down there. I recall several wonderful bookstores in the greater Lincoln City area (and of course Powells) and I do recall a couple of good restaurants (if they're still there) in Depoe Bay - The Sea Hag and Tidal Rave. Our Oregon trip will be in October but I doubt that we'll make it to the coast.

BTW, you are a bad influence on me. We are now making plans on going to the San Juans next weekend. I just couldn't stay away any longer after reading about your trip. We'll be going for three days and two nights, staying at a B&B in Friday Harbor and seeing the sights on San Juan Island and then going to Lopez on the way home.

  13. Les, you're killing me here! I just received an email from Travel Oregon and was already feeling bad that I didn't get to go this year. Even in the midst of my agony I am thrilled for you. *sob*sob*

Really, have a wonderful time. Take lots of fun pictures, eat wonderful food and read lots of great books. And post about it when you feel like it.

  14. SuziQ - We are! We are! And thanks for the restaurant recommendations. We had lunch at The Chowder Bowl yesterday and it was fabulous! It looks like they've expanded, as a portion of it sits where a cute little garden-like gift shop used to be. All these years of having tea at Tea and Tomes (right up the street) and we've never been in the Chowder Bowl. Thanks for helping us find yet another great restaurant. We'll hit the Rogue Brew Pub later in the visit.

We'll save next week as we fly home! :)

Kay - It's lovely here, as we expected. Gorgeous weather, although a little bit on the chilly side. But that's the coast for you.

Bybee - Thanks, we are so far.

I finished Heart-Shaped Box and it'll probably go in my Top Ten for the year, it was that good! I was sorry to see it end.

Nat - Isn't that a great quote? We didn't really need another vacation, though. We just had the time to visit both sets of families this summer and decided to go for it. Unfortunately, it'll be a long stretch before the next.

Stephanie - Thanks. It's been a lot of fun so far.

Stephanie - It is a pretty house, isn't it? I just love it and how it's nestled into the woods, yet so close to the water.

Yolanda - Thanks for stopping by here. You are very lucky to live in Oregon. We would love to move to the Pacific Northwest someday.

Kookiejar - I did, I did! It was a great book! One of the best I've read this year.

  15. Maudeen - Haven't hit any bookstores yet, but there's still plenty of time. I've heard of the restaurants you mentioned, but haven't eaten in either. Yet.

I'm glad you're going to be able to get over to the San Juans. What fun to stay in a B&B. I look forward to hearing all about it when you get back. Have fun!

Andi - And you'd be more than welcome to join us! Actually, the Oregon coast reminds me a bit of the Boone (NC) area, just without the humidity! Lots of mountains and trees. Don't see much of that in Nebraska! Well, we do have trees, but the mountains are pretty much nonexistent.

Robin - Thanks. It's nice to have family living in such beautiful parts of the country!

Heather - Thanks! It's pretty easy to have a good time out here. Wish we could figure out a way to afford to move here.

Nancy - I know, I know. I'm sorry. You can come next time, I promise! :)

  16. Booklogged - I'm sorry! Should I warn you when I'm about to post a bunch of pictures so you can turn your head away from the computer? ;) Speaking of which, I think I'll wait to organize my pics and posts when I get home. It's much easier to look at the photos on my own computer than on our laptop. Plus, I'm really trying to stay away from the computer and do more reading than the previous trip. No, really. ;)

  18. Les: Yay - glad you're having a great time - from watching the weather report today you're getting some rare and fabulous Oregon Coast weather too. Glad you liked The Chowder Bowl - Hope you like the Brew Pub too :-)

  19. Lesley - We are! Thanks.

SuziQ - It's been incredibly gorgeous here. Blue skies, moderate temps, although yesterday is was downright hot in Newport. The paper says it was 90 and I think that's pretty accurate. It was 80 in Depoe Bay. Unbelievable for this time of year.

We went to the Rogue Brew Pub yesterday and it was quite good. Great clam chowder and fish & chips. The beer was very good, too, although I can't remember which brew we finally settled on! Thanks for all the recommendations!
