Glacier National Park Road Trip (Fall 2022)

Avalanche Lake Hike
After breakfast, we headed out to the Apgar Visitors Center. It's a short drive from our campground, with plenty of RV parking, but the Center isn't very large. After checking out a couple of maps, I decided to take one of the free shuttles to Avalanche Lake Trailhead. The hike begins at the Trail of the Cedars Trailhead, which is a one-mile loop near Lake McDonald. The Trail of the Cedars is more of a walk than a hike, but it's a good warm-up before starting on the Avalanche Trail.

When I arrived at the lake, several people were looking through binoculars at something across the water. When I learned that they had spotted a bear, I was eager to get some photos, but he was very shy, hiding behind the shrubs as he feasted on berries. I finally got a couple of pictures, but had to zoom in tightly, so they're not very sharp. Still, I was thrilled to finally see a bear in the wild. And from a safe distance!
I would definitely do this hike again!
Lovely hike! And a bear sighting...at a safe distance. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteDeb, and now on our current trip, we've seen two black bears, both from the safety of our RV. We're eagerly waiting to see our first moose, but no luck so far.
DeleteWow the creek is gorgeous! And love seeing the bear too. Magical hike.
ReplyDeleteSusan, it was a wonderful hike! Very easy compared to Bear's Hump at Waterton. We've spotted a couple of black bears now on this trip (once we left Banff). Lots of elk in our current campground, but we're not as excited about those since we've seen them several times on our trips. Still waiting to see a moose!
DeleteOMG. Such a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteHelen, this is a hike that I'd reallly like to do again! It was gorgeous.
DeleteHelen, it really is a pretty place, but I'd like to see it again when it's not smoky. Seeing the Canadian Rockies this year is making up for last year.
ReplyDeleteSo many wonders - love that bear sighting! And, from a safe distance of course.
ReplyDeleteIliana, I was thrilled to see that bear, even if it was super far away.
