St. Mary/East Glacier KOA Holiday - St. Mary, Montana

Glacier National Park Road Trip (Fall 2022)
September 14-15, 2022
West Glacier to St. Mary, Montana
Daily Mileage: 110
Site: D2 (ideal sites A2, A6, B1-B6)*
Duration: 2 nights
Cost: $102/night
Weather: 70s with rain, sun & fog

The drive to St. Mary is very pretty along Hwy 2, and we took our time, stopping here and there along the way. We had heard that Hwy 89 was in the process of being repaved, so we decided to skip the muddy construction zone and took Hwy 464, which added about 10 miles to the drive. Hwy 464 runs through a desolate prairie and was very hilly with lots of crosswinds. The muddy construction area might have been more desirable!

St. Mary/East Glacier KOA is one of the nicer KOAs that we've camped in. We had full hook-ups, a level gravel pad, picnic table, fire pit, very nice showers (free and very clean), dump station, pool, hot tub, laundry, bocci ball, and a large store and snack bar. The free WiFi was very good, although we had excellent service on Verizon (but none on T-Mobile).

It was very hazy the day we arrived, and it poured later that evening. The following day was much nicer with a clear blue sky.

The campground is near St. Mary's Village and Visitors Center, as well Many Glacier/Swift Current Lake (via 5-6 miles of gravel road), both of which we visited during our stay.

Triplets!

Beautiful morning light!

*I loved the views from this campground, but our site wasn't very secluded. We drove past Many Glacier Campground, which looked very pretty. Dry camping, but might be worthwhile.

  1. Okay. St. Mary's ... so is that near St Mary's lake right? It looks pretty, love the sky. When we've gone to Glacier we've stayed at Lake McDonald lodge in the park near Going-to-the-Sun road. Have you been on that? It's a crazy high road which actually was used in the beginning of the movie The Shining. We've ridden our bikes up it -- when it's closed to vehicles before June 15. I think we drove thru East Glacier on the way to get there. And saw St. Mary's lake, big.

    1. Susan, yep, it's near St. Mary's Lake. Stay tuned. I have a post about Going-to-the-Sun Road. :) I'll bet it's a great road to cycle on when it's closed to cars.
