Whitefish, Montana - Daytrip

Glacier National Park Road Trip (Fall 2022)
Whitefish, Montana Daytrip

With all the empty sites, it would have been nice to be more spread out...

We started our day with coffee and baked goods at Odd Fellows Coffee House in Columbia Falls. We missed the morning rush and pretty much had the place to ourselves. I love the exposed brick and funky decor. The coffee was great, but the pastries look better than they tasted.

We drove to Whitefish (an easy 15 minute/10 mile drive) and found an independent bookstore that I wanted to visit. The layout of Bookworks is confusing, as well as cramped, so we didn't linger too long. Of course, I had to support them with a purchase, so I got a couple of books that had been on my radar. Have I read them yet? No, but I will!

We were getting hungry, and I had read great reviews for a BBQ place nearby, so we headed over to get lunch. Piggyback turned out to be a great choice, but the indoor seating is somewhat tight and very noisy, so we moved outside to one of the picnic tables. Shortly after our food arrived, it began to pour! The umbrella kept Rod dry, but the rain poured right off of it onto my side of the bench. It didn't last too long, and of course, my closet was just a few steps away in the parking lot, so I was able to change into dry clothes. Another win for RV travel!

Outstanding pulled pork sliders.

Rod's ribs were very good, too.

If you find yourself in Whitefish, we highly recommend this BBQ joint!

    1. Helen, it's also nice that our RV is small enough that we don't need to tow a car in order to leave our campsites and go wandering for the day. Added benefit is that we always have our refrigerator and bathroom with us! :)

  2. Vicki, the food at Piggyback BBQ was outstanding. As far as those two books by Strout, it's been almost a year since I bought them and they are still on my TBR shelf! Maybe I'll start in on them when we return from our current trip!

  3. We passed thru Whitefish and drove around but I dont think we stopped anywhere. The town felt a bit cramped or something. But I know Calgary folks who have a place there for skiing and golf. Hmm. too far a drive!

    1. Susan, it is a bit cramped, as I recall. I walked around a couple of blocks before heading back to the RV to go get lunch. Yeah, that's a long drive from Calgary! I'd opt for Fernie for skiing and golf.

  4. I'm not really into BBQ but those sliders look yummy. Isn't it disappointing when you go to a cafe, grab a pastry and the treat is less than wonderful? I'm thinking at that expense and extra calories I'm eating, it better be yummy! haha...

    1. Iliana, I always think I'll only eat one or two sliders and save the leftovers for later, but somehow I managed to eat them all! I agree about less than wonderful desserts/pastries. We usually love everything we try, but the cinnamon roll was gluten-free and just wasn't very good.
